11th-ranked Tennessee used a balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense to claim its first-round NCAA Tournament contest with a decisive 5-0 blanking of Furman on Friday night. In snapping the Lady Paladins' 11-match winning streak, the Lady Volunteers (17-5-1) picked up their first-ever NCAA victory and extended their unbeaten streak to a school-record eight matches. The five goals surrendered by Furman (16-6-1) were its most since an 8-0 loss to Clemson on Sept. 24, 1996. UT will now face Conference USA Tournament winner No. 22 Cincinnati (17-3-3), a 1-0 victor over Kentucky, on Sunday afternoon for the right to reach the Sweet 16.
"We were coming off an emotional win (over Florida) and with the messy playing conditions, we came out a little sluggish," said third-year Tennessee coach Angela Kelly. "Although we created some opportunities in the first half, Furman did a good job of defending."
Over the first 35 minutes, the home team could not solve Lady Paladin freshman keeper Andie Hinshaw, who was required to make eight saves during that stretch. At 36:18, UT sophomore Sue Flamini (Cranford, N.J.) fired a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box that squirted through the goalie's hands and into the net for a 1-0 Lady Vol advantage. The score was the first of the season for the midfielder and marked her first tally since netting a pair of goals against Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference Tournament on Nov. 8, 2001, in Baton Rouge, La. Sophomore Lyndsey Patterson (Puyallup, Wash.) and junior Rhian Wilkinson (Baie d'Urfe, Quebec), the league leader in assists, notched helpers on the play. At the break, Tennessee held a commanding 14-1 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
"I challenged our team at halftime to pick up the pace, and that's just what they did," said Kelly. "A win is a win and now we have to prepare for Cincinnati on Sunday."
Sophomore Keeley Dowling (Carmel, Ind.), who headed in the Golden Goal in the SEC Championship versus Florida, landed her noggin on a corner kick taken by Wilkinson at 52:04 for her fourth goal of '02 to give her club a 2-0 lead. Wilkinson's second assist of the night gave her 15 on the season and pulled her to within one of the career mark of 26 helpers held by senior Jen Laughridge (Wilson, N.C.).
The Lady Vols increased their lead 6:50 later when Laughridge banged home a cross from junior Carie Swibas (Lakewood, Colo.) for her seventh goal of the year. Swibas' assist was her second of the season and first since setting up Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) in a 2-0 win at No. 12 Clemson on Sept. 15.
The Big Orange defense, anchored by first-team All-SEC selection Dowling, Laughridge, junior Marie-Eve Nault (Trois-Rivieres, Quebec) and Swibas, held the Furman offense completely in check. The Lady Paladins' lone shot of the match came at 41:14 and was taken by junior Emily Turgeon, the Southern Conference's Player of the Year. Senior Ellen Dean (Memphis, Tenn.) made one stop for her third shutout in the last four outings and sixth solo shutout of the season. The Tennessee defense has registered seven shutouts this fall, matching the 1997 and 1998 squads for the most bagels in a single season.
Flamini popped in her second goal of the night at 77:33 off a free kick and then Patrick finalized the margin a mere 25 seconds later off assists from junior Nikki Bratta (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Kristin McGrath (Durango, Colo.). Patrick's team-high 12th goal ended a five-match scoring drought for the second-team All-SEC performer.
Tennessee wound up managing a 27-1 dominance on the short chart, led by six attempts apiece from Flamini and Patrick. Hinshaw recorded a career-high 11 saves in her 86:24 of action before freshman Christy Dupin finished up the final 3:36 for Head Coach Brian Lee's club.
The Bearcats, riding a six-match winning skein, ousted Kentucky earlier today in Knoxville on a score at 48:04 by senior forward Amy Simonson. UC has notched 13 shutouts this year and has given up just 13 goals in its 23 contests. Tennessee and Cincinnati have never met on the pitch.
