BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - LSU softball coach Yvette Girouard has been named SEC Coach of the Year, Alabama outfielder Jackie McClain was named SEC Freshman of the Year and LSU pitcher Britni Sneed was honored as SEC Athlete of the Year in a vote of the league head coaches. The Lady Vols did not place any student-athletes on either the first or second team for the second year in a row.
Sneed became three-time All-SEC honoree as the Houston, Texas, native is among the conference leaders in ERA (.66), opposing batting average (.104), innings pitched (212) and leads the league in wins (39), games started (33), and batters struck out (316). Sneed has helped the Lady Tigers to a 49-9 overall record and a conference record of 26-4. The imposing hurler was also one of only two unanimous All-SEC selections.
Girouard, in her first year at LSU, earns her first SEC Coach of the Year award after the Tigers claimed the Western Divsion and overall SEC Regular Season Championship. She has also guided the Tigers to a top five national ranking.
In her first year of collegiate softball, McClain was voted first team All-SEC in addition to her Freshman of the Year honor. The Soddy Daisy, Tenn., native led the league in RBIs with 58 and boasts a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
One player earned All-SEC recognition for the fourth time: Alabama's Kelly Kretschman. This is the third recognition for Florida's Ashley Boone, Alabama's Shelley Laird, Auburn's Mary Petrie and LSU's Stephanie Hastings. The first and second teams consist of 12 positions each: infielders (4) and outfielders (3), pitchers (2), catcher (1), DP/Utility (1) and at-large (1). The 2001 SEC Softball Tournament is Thursday-Sunday, May 10-13 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
