KNOXVILLE - Tennessee made it three straight wins at its own Lady Vol Invitational on Saturday night with a 9-2 thumping of Centenary College. At 3-1 in the tournament, Jim Beitia's squad is now deadlocked with Virginia heading into the final day of action within the double round-robin affair. The orange-clad squads will clash at one o'clock tomorrow, while UT will have a rematch with the Ladies to close out the weekend at three o'clock.
Senior Annie Fletcher put the Orange on top 3-0 with her first career home run in the top of the second. With classmate Melissa Radley on third after a single, stolen base and an a passed ball and junior Adrianna Wilson at first after a two-out walk from freshman Cheyenne Daries, Fletcher's blast went over the left field fence.
The Big Orange extended its lead to 5-0 during the next inning, as junior first baseman Hannah Low tripled deep to center to drive in senior Maura Mollet and freshman Nicole Johnson. Mollet started things off with a single and then scampered down to second on a passed ball. After Johnson drew a walk, Daries retired senior Janette Koshell and Radley before Low crushed a 1-1 pitch for a two-RBI three-bagger.
The Ladies broke into the scoring column on a two-out single to left field in the third by freshman Gretchen Schmaltz off UT junior Nicole Borg that plated senior Susan Larson. The Lady Vols showed resiliency on the play though, as freshman catcher Rachael Mink threw out Schmaltz as she attempted to take second after the run came across.
Tennessee would bust the game wide open with two runs on two hits and two Centenary miscues in the fifth to build a 7-1 cushion and the Lady Vols tacked on two additional runs to make the count 9-1 in the sixth. Centenary avoided the run-rule with an RBI double by Jordan Lansdale in the seventh.
Borg went the distance, giving up five hits and striking out a pair, to boost her mark to 5-8. Daries scattered nine hits and nine runs to drop to 5-12 for CC. The trio of seniors Koshell, Mollet and Radley chipped in with a pair of hits towards the winning effort. Schmaltz had two hits for the Ladies.
