KNOXVILLE (Apr. 6, 2001) -- The University of Virginia improved to 2-0 on the first day of the Lady Vol Spring Invitational by downing host Tennessee, 2-1, at Tyson Park on Friday, April 6. Junior right-hander Kristen Dennis (12-4) limited the UT offense to five hits and recorded eight strikeouts as the home team fell for the eighth consecutive game. The Cavaliers (35-9) had earlier toppled Centenary, 12-4, in six innings, while the Orange and White (14-27) was playing its first tournament contest.
Senior Meaghan Young began the contest by rifling a double into left field off UT sophomore Stephanie Humphrey. Junior Kelly McCabe drew a walk and then sophomore Ruby Rojas executed a sacrifice to give the Cavaliers runners in scoring position with just one down. However, Humphrey regained her composure to strike out Dennis and freshman Heather Field to keep Virginia off the board.
The Wahoos broke the ice in the top of the third, as Field smashed a two-out double to left center field to plate McCabe with the initial run of the game. McCabe had reached on an infield error with one out and then received additional life on a dropped relay throw as she attempted to take second base. Although Rojas legged out an infield hit, McCabe remained on second until racing home on Field's two-bagger.
Field started the sixth with another double, this time to right center. Freshman Tracy Sherman advanced her teammate to third with a sacrifice bunt and rookie Hannah Owings earned a free pass to put runners on the corners with one out. Sophomore second baseman Jill Bumler lofted a sacrifice fly to deep center field to drive in Field and lift Virginia to a 2-0 advantage.
Junior catcher Adrianna Wilson helped the Lady Vols avoid a fourth straight shutout with a solo homer over the center field fence with one out in the seventh. The dinger was the first of the campaign for the Cypress, Calif., native.
Humphrey went the distance, with five hits and five K's, but dropped to 7-9 with the loss. Field was 2-for-3 to lead UVa, while freshman right fielder Nicole Johnson was a perfect 2-for-2 for UT.
