- Box Score
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- After squeaking by the Lady Vols in Tuesday's first game, #19 South Carolina wasted little time in settling the back end of the doubleheader. The Gamecocks tallied three runs on three hits off Tennessee junior Nicole Borg in the first stanza and freshman Stacey Johnson allowed only two singles en route to a 4-0 shutout and a sweep at Beckham Field. Jim Beitia's club slipped to 14-25 overall and 4-12 in the SEC with its sixth straight setback, while USC boosted its totals to 25-12-1 and 9-4 in league action.
In the home half of the first, senior Megan Donohoo stroked a one-out single to left and sophomore Debralee Troesh followed with a hit to center for the Garnet and Black. Junior Adrianna Baggetta drew a walk from Borg to load the sacks before rookie Amber Curtis earned another free pass to allow Donohoo to come across with the initial run. Senior Adrienne Genovese then cranked a two-run double to left center to extend Carolina's lead to 3-0. Borg would set down sophomore Danielle Quinones on a pop-out and the right-hander fanned sophomore Jodi Fittro to strand a pair of runners in scoring position.
USC added another run to its cushion in the second, as Donohoo's two-bagger to left field scored senior Joyce McMillin all the way from first. McMillin had been struck by one of Borg's pitches with one down to reach base.
Lady Vol senior Melissa Radley foiled Johnson's bid for a no-hitter with an infield single in the fourth. The second baseman turned on a 0-2 count and narrowly beat the throw over to first base from USC shortstop Curtis. Radley registered Tennessee's other single to start the seventh.
Johnson struck out five to pick up her 12th win against four defeats, with Borg dropping to 4-8 after giving up hits and the four runs. Donohoo and Curtis had two hits apiece to lead South Carolina.
Tennessee will attempt to salvage the final contest of the series with a single game tomorrow at five o'clock. UT will then prepare to host the Lady Vol Spring Invitational versus Centenary, Stephen F. Austin and Virginia from Friday through Sunday at Tyson Park.
