Lady Vols Manage Only One Hit for Second Straight Contest
In their second outing on day one of the Louisville Slugger Tournament in Tampa, Fla., the Lady Vol softball team aimed to rebound from a setback to third-rated Arizona against the Rainbow Wahine from the University of Hawaii. Although UT sophomore Stephanie Humphrey and UH freshman Felicity Witt engaged in a stirring pitching duel which entered the fifth frame scoreless, things changed dramatically over the last few innings which left Jim Beitia's club on the short end of a 5-0 margin.
A member of the Australian Junior National Team, Witt enjoyed a sensational college debut by recording 11 strikeouts and allowing only a two-out, first-inning double to Lady Vol sophomore third baseman Carissa Roustan. Her counterpart in the pitching circle was more than up to the challenge, as Humphrey maintained a perfect game into the fourth before issuing a walk to Tyree Woodruff.
With zeros dotting the scoreboard at the USF Softball Complex, Rainbow third baseman April Crowell smacked Humphrey's initial offering of the fifth frame over the right field fence to give Hawaii a 1-0 lead. The homer cleared the 190-foot mark and landed on top of the bullpen.
After Witt retired Lady Vol senior Melissa Radley (fly out) and senior Janette Koshell (ground out) to lead off the sixth, Roustan drew a free pass on a 3-2 count to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. However, Witt would set down junior catcher Adrianna Wilson on strikes to halt any possible Tennessee threat.
Seizing the game's momentum, Hawaii broke the affair wide open in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on four hits and three damaging Lady Vol errors. After a one-out flare into left by Woodruff, UH sophomore shortstop Kate Judd smacked a double to the wall in right field to plate pinch runner Kimi Kaneshiro with the initial insurance run. A miscue on the hit enabled Judd to advance to third and she was able to score on the very next play, as a wild throw by Tennessee in the infield could not gun down Trisha Ramos at first.
With the Lady Vols' fortunes teetering on the edge, Crowell doubled to right field to drive in pinch runner Ashley Tokumine and build the UH cushion to 4-0. A base-hit by senior Kristin Anderson pushed Crowell over to third base and the Orange then allowed Crowell to scamper home with the final run as a throw attempting to catch Anderson swiping second base landed in the outfield.
In the losing effort, native Knoxvillian Humphrey allowed six hits and was charged with three earned runs. The right-hander also matched a personal-best with five strikeouts in just the eighth start of her young career.
Beitia's squad will look to break into the win column with two more games tomorrow. UT will face event host South Florida (0-4) at 6 p.m., followed by an encounter against Florida Atlantic (1-1).
