- Box Score
Tennessee's offense could not get on track until the seventh and the team's defense committed six more errors as the Lady Vols dropped a 7-1 decision to the University of the Pacific to complete Sunday's twinbill. The Tigers plated five runs in the second stanza on three hits and four critical UT miscues to send Jim Beitia's club back to Knoxville with its fifth defeat on its six-game swing through California. Pacific raised its 2001 record to 7-4 with the pair of victories at Simoni Field, while the Orange slipped to 8-13.
Now 2-2, rookie right-hander Jennifer Dacre limited the visitors to only a second-inning single by senior center fielder Janette Koshell and a fifth-inning blooper into right by sophomore right fielder Nicole Murray before the Lady Vols avoided the shutout in the last frame.
Sophomore third baseman Carissa Roustan led off the seventh with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A single into left by freshman catcher Rachael Mink moved Roustan over to third and Mink would later reach second on junior Maria Torres' infield grounder. A sacrifice fly to right by senior shortstop Annie Fletcher then drove in Roustan to put UT on the board.
The second inning proved to be Tennessee's undoing, as the Tigers sent 10 batters to the plate against freshman pitcher Leigh Ann Ellis and broke the contest wide open with the five unearned runs. In falling to 1-4, Ellis would surrender seven runs, five hits and walk four without allowing an earned run over five innings.
Sophomore Stephanie Humphrey hurled two hitless frames with three strikeouts. Five different players contributed one hit apiece for Pacific, as the Tigers out-hit the Lady Vols by the 5-4 margin.
Beitia's charges will resume action next Friday at the Eagle Classic hosted by Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga. Opponents that the Lady Vols will face during the three-day tournament include Eastern Division rival Florida, Florida A&M, GSU and Pittsburgh. Playoff rounds will follow the round-robin portion of the event.
