Junior Deanna Rodriguez Handcuffs Lady Vols on Four Hits

Santa Clara junior hurler Deanna Rodriguez kept the Lady Vol offense firmly in check with a four-hitter in helping her squad to a 1-0 shutout and a sweep of Wednesday's doubleheader. With its second straight one-run blanking, Tennessee fell to 7-10 and began its eight-game jaunt to California on the wrong side of the ledger. Santa Clara has now taken four of its last five games to boost its tally to 5-7. The Orange has already endured nine shutout defeats after being held scoreless 10 times in 63 games last spring.

Sophomore shortstop Lauren Hall opened the Broncos' fourth with a single into left field and then advanced to second on an errant pick-off attempt. Following a sacrifice by Rodriguez that pushed Hall over to third, second baseman Tess Nesbitt stroked a double into right center field to give SC a 1-0 lead. Junior Nicole Borg would pitch out of further trouble by having sophomore Lauren Fissori pop out and then the Lady Vol right-hander whiffed junior Maren Hawkins.

Borg (3-3) scattered seven hits and struck out five in seeing her personal winning streak halted at three games. Meanwhile, Rodriguez tossed her second shutout and improved to 2-4 in '01. Center fielder Sydney Wiginton had two hits for the victorious Broncos, with the quartet of senior Annie Fletcher, senior Janette Koshell, sophomore Carissa Roustan and junior Adrianna Wilson registering singles for UT.

After suffering its first back-to-back 1-0 defeats since Southeastern Conference rival South Carolina turned the trick on April 5, 1997, Tennessee resumes action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. PT with another doubleheader against St. Mary's College (8-4) in Moraga, Calif. The encounter will mark the first-ever meeting between the schools.
