CORDELL ADVANCES THROUGH QUALIFIER AT SOUTHEAST CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the first day of action at the Omni Hotels Southeast Region Championships University of Tennessee sophomore Brooke Cordell earned a berth into the main singles draw by surviving two qualifying matches.
Cordell first got the better of Winthrop's Renata Caceres in a 7-6 (11), 6-4 decision before defeating North Carolina's Caroline Hill, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. She will meet Karissa Johnson in the opening round of singles play at 9 a.m. on Friday.
Also in qualifying action, freshman Ashley Robards defeated Hunter McRae of UNC Wilmington, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round, but later fell to Kentucky's Shannon Stafford, 7-6 (0), 6-2. Freshman Breanna Kray dropped a tough three-set match to Melisa San Martin of Louisville in the opening round, 0-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The Lady Vols' doubles tandem of junior Vilmarie Castellvi and senior Agnes Wiski eased through their first round match with an 8-3 victory over Orellana and Peel of UNC Greensboro. The pair will play in the second round on Friday.
Joining them in the round two will be junior Crystal Cleveland and senior Alison Ojeda who are seeded fourth in the tournament and received a first round bye.
Freshmen Majen Immink and Kray suffered an 8-4 setback to Coastal Carolina's Bajrambasic and Kidd in the first round of doubles play. The UT pair of Cordell and senior Kim Gates also exited the tournament early with a default.
Ojeda, Gates, Castellvi, Cleveland and Immink will all join Cordell in the first round on Friday. The regional championships will run through Monday.
