Jason Wooding

Jason Wooding enters his first season as Tennessee’s associate director of football sports performance. He joined Derek Owings’ staff in January 2026.
Wooding arrives on Rocky Top after serving as the associate director of football strength and conditioning at Maryland the last five seasons (2021-25) under head coach Mike Locksley.
Wooding specialized in on-field development of offensive skill positions and coordinated the use of sports science for speed and power enhancement. He also developed and implemented mobility and return-to-play protocols for injured athletes, while assisting with off-the-field leadership and mentorship programs.
The Terrapins advanced to three consecutive bowl games from 2021-23 during his tenure, including the Music City Bowl, Duke’s Mayo Bowl and Pinstripe Bowl.
Wooding was previously the associate director of strength and conditioning at Texas Tech for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
Wooding arrived in Lubbock after working in a similar capacity with the Houston men’s basketball program during the 2018-19 campaign under head coach Kelvin Sampson. The Cougars, who finished an impressive 33-4 overall, claimed the American Athletic Conference regular-season title and advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1984.
Houston was Wooding’s first full-time coaching position as he was previously a graduate assistant at Mercer from 2017-18. He obtained his master’s in higher educational leadership from Mercer in 2018, while also working with the athletic department’s strength and conditioning staff.
The Langley Park, Maryland, native earned his bachelor’s in health science from Howard in 2014. He was a two-way player for Howard during his time as a student-athlete, starring at both linebacker and running back during his collegiate career.
Wooding is certified by the CSCS and USA Weightlifting and is also a certified FRC mobility specialist and level one precision nutrition coach.
