Condredge Holloway stands as one of the most beloved athletes ever to represent the Tennessee Volunteers. A three-year starter at quarterback on the football team, "The Artful Dodger" led the Vols to three bowl games and finished his career as the program's all-time total yardage leader (3,102 passing, 966 rushing). The Huntsville, Alabama, native also was an All-American shortstop on the baseball diamond. He is one of only three UT baseball players ever to have their jersey retired, as his No. 1 was honored in 2015. Holloway led the way in breaking down racial barriers during his time at Tennessee. He became the first Black player to start at quarterback on an SEC football team, and he was also the first Black member of the UT baseball program. He enjoyed a great career in the Canadian Football League and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2011, he was the subject of an ESPN Films documentary: The Color Orange: The Condredge Holloway Story. And on Sept. 2, 2021, Holloway was among four Black Tennessee football trailblazers who were honored with statues of their likeness dedicated outside of Gate 21 at Neyland Stadium.
