Marin Delivers Walk-Off Blow as #17/19 Vols Take Series Opener vs. Wright State
March 06, 2026 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – More late-inning magic propelled No. 17/19 Tennessee to a 4-3 walk-off win over Wright State in Friday night's series opener at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Sophomore shortstop Manny Marin delivered the game-winning hit with a single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth to score to score Garrett Wright from second base after he led off the inning with a double.
Three of the Vols' six hits and two of their four runs came over the final three innings as they scored the final three runs of the game to overcome a 3-1 deficit and record their second walk-off win of the year.
Wright and Henry Ford led UT at the plate with two hits apiece while the bullpen came up big once again with four shutout innings between Brandon Arvidson and Brady Frederick.
Ford drove in two runs and had the game-tying hit with a single that he rocketed off the wall in right field. Jay Abernathy used his elite speed to race all the way around from first on the play and beat the tag at home to even the score at three in the bottom of the seventh.
Ford also drove in the Vols' first run of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the third before Blake Grimmer pulled the Big Orange within a run with a solo home run to right field in the sixth inning.
Wright picked up right where he left off on Wednesday, recording a pair of hits and reaching base three times, including being hit with a pitch for the 52nd time in his career in his first at-bat of the game.
Arvidson recorded some big outs in the middle innings to keep the Vols within striking distance, punching out five while allowing just two hits over three scoreless innings of relief. Frederick picked up his third win of the season after retiring the Raiders in order in the top of the ninth, striking out a pair.
Tegan Kuhns battled through five innings despite not having his best stuff, finishing with seven strikeouts and no walks.
UP NEXT: Tennessee and Wright State will square off again on Saturday in game two of the series. First pitch has been moved up to 3 p.m. due to expected rain and inclement weather on Saturday night.
