Homers from Ford and Chapman Lift #17/19 Vols to 5-4 Win
March 07, 2026 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 17/19 Tennessee came away with another comeback win at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Saturday, thanks to home runs from Henry Ford and Reese Chapman, as it took down Wright State, 5-4.Â
The Raiders got the scoring started right away in the top of the first inning. A leadoff walk followed by a double into the right-center field gap set up a fielder's choice RBI ground out that scored the first run of the game.Â
WSU plated one more run on another fielder's choice RBI after shortstop Braylen Bloomquist was safe at first on a potential double play ball to third base, spotting the Raiders an early 2-0 lead.Â
Chapman opened the scoring account for the Big Orange in the bottom of the second inning, launching a solo shot over the videoboard in right field to cut into the two-run deficit.Â
After a leadoff walk from Blake Grimmer and a double down the left-field line by Garrett Wright, Chapman came through again, roping a double into the right field corner to drive in both runners, giving the Volunteers their first lead of the game at 3-2. Â
Landon Mack was solid in his fourth start of the year and exited the game after going five innings, striking out five batters, and only surrendering three hits to earn the win and improve to 3-1.
Ford stepped in with a runner on and no one out in the bottom of the fifth and added to the Tennessee lead with a 412-foot, two-run bomb over the porches in left, giving the Vols a 5-2 lead.Â
The Raiders answered with two runs of their own in the sixth as a leadoff double by Hunter Warren and a Bloomquist single set up an RBI fielder's choice on a swinging bunt, scoring the first run of the inning.
Wright State right fielder Cy Turner brought another run home later in the inning, lining his second single of the day to right field to cut the Vols' lead to one.Â
Cam Appenzeller was the first out of the pen for head coach Josh Elander and the Volunteers, logging two innings before handing it off to sophomore Brayden Krenzel.
The hard-throwing right hander was excellent in his second save opportunity of the season. Krenzel powered through the last two innings of the game, striking out four to seal the 5-4 victory for the Vols.
Ford and Chapman paced Tennessee offensively, combining for six of the team's nine hits (three apiece) while driving in all five of UT's runs on the day.
UP NEXT: Tennessee returns to Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the series finale matinee, looking to secure its second weekend sweep of the season.Â
