Mitsui Named ITA Ohio Valley Region Senior Player Of The Year
June 10, 2025 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee senior Shunsuke Mitsui has been named ITA Ohio Valley Region Senior Player of the Year, the ITA announced on Tuesday.
Â
Mitsui, a fourth-year Vol from Shizuoka, Japan, earned the honor after concluding his collegiate career by earning ITA All-America and All-SEC First Team accolades for the second consecutive season. He also helped Tennessee finish with a 22-9 record on the year and a trip to the NCAA Super Regional round.
Â
The Big Orange standout finished the campaign with a 36-8 overall singles record, including 11-3 in league play. Â His mark included a 21-4 résumé in dual matches, including 13-2 at No. 2 and 8-2 at No. 1. He carved out a 15-4 worksheet in individual competition as well, went 14-5 on the season vs. ranked opponents and finished at No. 25 nationally in the ITA singles rankings.
Â
In the final ITA Ohio Valley Regional rankings, Mitsui finished second in singles and teamed with Alan Jesudason to wind up ninth in doubles with a 23-6 overall mark.
Â
Mitsui continued the trend of UT having a player earn All-America status each season since the 2018 campaign after making the round of 16 at the 2024-25 NCAA Singles Championships. He became the first Vol to make it to at least the second round of the event in two consecutive seasons since VFL Adam Walton accomplished that feat at the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Individual Championships.
Â
At the conclusion of his four-year stint on Rocky Top, Mitsui ranks No. 5 in program history with 128 career singles triumphs, with only 33 defeats. He became only the seventh Vol to ever record 100+ singles wins and 100+ doubles (104) victories in a career.
