February 06, 2025 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The nationally ranked Tennessee track & field program gears up for its fifth consecutive weekend of indoor competition, splitting up for a pair of meets in Virginia on Friday and Saturday. UT's top-notch pole vault squad will head to Blacksburg for the Doc Hale VT Elite Meet, while a group of sprinters, throwers, hurdlers, jumpers and distance specialists will travel to Virginia Beach for the 62nd East Coast Invitational.
Friday's action begins at Virginia Tech with the men's pole vault bronze competition on Friday at 4 p.m. and concludes with the women's 800-meter at approximately 6:20 p.m. Freshman Donna Douglas leads off Saturday in the women's shot put at Virginia Beach, and the weekend will wrap up with Tennessee fielding two teams in the men's 4x400-meter relay.
Meet schedules and live results for both competitions can be viewed on the 2024-25 Tennessee Track & Field schedule page.
LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee sent more than 40 athletes to Fayetteville, Arkansas, last week for the Razorback Invitational. Redshirt junior pole vaulter Cade Gray stood out on the men's side, clearing a personal-best of 5.60m (18-4.5) that equaled the No. 3 performer in school history and ranks top five nationally this year. Lady Vol hurdler Layla Anderson was strong in the middle of the track en route to an event title in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the final in a personal-best 8.04 that ranks second in Lady Vol history and third in the NCAA this season.
Additionally, rookie miler Gavin Genisio took down the UT freshman record in the men's indoor mile, clocking in at 4:03.82 to place second in his heat at Arkansas.
UT IN THE RANKINGS: After their performances in Fayetteville, the Vols and Lady Vols rose in the latest edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national indoor track & field rating index. The men moved up one spot to No. 24 in the country, while the Lady Vols vaulted up six spots to No. 18.
Additionally, Tennessee had six event groups ranked top 10 nationally in the most recent USTFCCCA #EventSquad Rankings – which are tabulated by averaging the best mark from each team's top four performers in each respective track & field event for the indoor season. This includes the No. 1 men's pole vault squad in the nation with an average season-best of 5.44m (17-10) in 2025.
