March 19, 2024 | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second time in as many weeks, the Southeastern Conference has named Tennessee sophomore Karlyn Pickens its SEC Pitcher of the Week.
The right-hander made two starts against No. 11 Missouri this past weekend as the Lady Vols opened league play. Pickens compiled a 2-0 record with a pair of complete game shutouts.
The Weaverville, North Carolina, native struck out 16 batters over 12 innings of work and only allowed two walks and five hits.
Pickens got the ball in game one and tossed her eighth complete game and seventh shutout of the season as she two-hit the Tigers with five strikeouts and a walk. She was even better in game three, fanning 11 and surrendering just one walk and three hits to earn her 12th victory of the year and eighth shutout.
With the shutouts, Pickens extended her shutout streak to 46 innings without allowing a run. The streak – which dates to March 2 – has seen Pickens collect eight wins, pitch six complete games, and earn six shutouts while striking out 58.
Teams are hitting .099 with 15 hits and nine walks against Pickens since March 2.
The flamethrower has now been recognized by the SEC for a weekly honor six times in her career – three times as the SEC Pitcher of the Week.
The seventh-ranked Lady Vols go on a Carolina road swing this weekend, starting with a Thursday night visit to Western Carolina before playing a three-game set in Columbia, South Carolina, against the Gamecocks.
