Pickens Tabbed SEC Pitcher of the Week
March 12, 2024 | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference office announced Tuesday afternoon that Tennessee right-handed pitcher Karlyn Pickens was named SEC Pitcher of the Week for her efforts across five appearances in the circle from March 4-10.
The sophomore from Weaverville, North Carolina, compiled a 4-0 record for the Lady Vols and tallied three complete game shutouts last week. Pickens tossed 26.1 scoreless innings in her five appearances, allowing only eight hits over that span while racking up 34 strikeouts and surrendering just six walks.
In a midweek road tilt at No. 10 Clemson on March 5, the Lady Vol flamethrower pitched six innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts and two walks to earn the victory. It marked her second career win over a top-10 Clemson ball club, as Pickens helped tame the fifth-ranked Tigers her freshman season with seven scoreless frames in a 1-0 victory on Feb. 25, 2023.
Pickens was magnificent in the circle during three outings at the Tennessee Invitational this past weekend. In Tennessee's victory over South Dakota on Friday, March 8, she pitched a one-hit shutout against the Coyotes while fanning 13 batters over 7.0 innings. In back-to-back appearances against Ohio State, the righty threw 6.1 scoreless frames which included a five-inning shutout to close out the home tournament on Sunday.
This marks the second SEC Pitcher of the Week nod of Pickens' career, as she was recognized last year on March 21. She was also named SEC Freshman of the Week on three occasions last season and went on to be named the 2023 SEC Freshman of the Year.
The No. 8 Lady Vols spring into conference action this weekend with a three-game home series against the 12th-ranked Missouri Tigers at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. Friday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m., while Saturday's contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start. Sunday's series finale is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
