Tennessee Tops Kentucky 1-0, Advances to Second Round of SEC Tournament

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Tennessee soccer opened up the SEC tournament with a 1-0 win against Kentucky on Sunday night.
With the win, UT (9-5-4, 3-4-3) moves on to the second round of the conference tournament and is set to face off against No. 1 seed Mississippi State.
Woods' goal, which is her fifth of the season, came in the 15th minute to put the Lady Vols ahead early. The Saline, Michigan, native volleyed the ball perfectly over the keeper to get the scoreboard working early.Â
In just her second collegiate start in goal, freshman Cayden Norris came up big, logging five saves and posting her second consecutive clean sheet.
Kentucky (11-4-4, 3-3-4) posted 15 shots on the night, including 12 that came in the second half to apply pressure, but the Tennessee backline held firm to log their eighth shutout of the season.
Alivia Stott and Sarah Bridenstine each created chances for the Lady Vols in the second frame but UK's Marz Josephson snagged the saves.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will square off with No. 1 Mississippi State at 4:30pm ET for the second round of the SEC Tournament. The match is set to air on SEC Network. Additionally, it will mark the first time the two teams will face each other in the conference tournament.
TOURNAMENT TIME: The Lady Vols are 19-17-6 all-time in SEC Tournament games and have claimed five SEC Tournament titles, winning the event in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2021. Following the win over Kentucky, UT has now registered 13 shutouts in its SEC Tournament history.
