Lady Vols Wrap up UT Home Invitational
October 27, 2024 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women's tennis team concluded action on Sunday afternoon at Barksdale Stadium. The team posted a perfect doubles slate before tallying two wins in singles.
Tennessee kicked off the morning with doubles action, claiming three straight wins. The No. 79-ranked pair of Vanesa Suarez and Leyla Britez Risso topped Nebraska's Ana Zambrek and Emma Rizzeto in a 6-4 result. Conley Raidt and Saray Yli-Piipari outlasted Nebraska's Maria Taranova and Lucky Loy, 6-4. The duo of Elim Yan and Maeve Thornton etched a 6-4 victory against Ohio State's Shelly Bereznyak and Teah Chavez.
"Today was way better in doubles," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "As a tennis player, when you finish the day and don't feel well, somehow you have to mentally or physically get on the court and finish the day feeling good so that you can come out and compete the next day. That's what the team did. They all did a few things on their own to put themselves in a situation where they can go out there and compete with energy, excitement and enthusiasm."
In singles, the Lady Vols notched two wins over their respective opponents. Britez Risso posted a 6-4, 6-3 win against Virgnia's Martina Genis. Thornton also fired off a victory against Ohio State's Megan Basil in 7-5, 6-4 fashion.
Up Next: Tennessee is back in action in two tournaments from Nov. 1-3. Select members from the team will compete at the ITA Sectionals, while other members will face off at the Rome Tennis Center Collegiate Classic.
