Vols Sweep on Opening Day of SEC/Big 12 Challenge

STILLWATER, Okla. – Members of Tennessee's tennis squad dominated on the opening day of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge Friday afternoon, going undefeated in doubles and singles competition at Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Vols recorded their first win of the day in doubles play as James Newton and Chris Li took down Jonas Gundaacker and Takeyasu Sekiguchi of Texas Tech 6-0, 7-6(5).
Tennessee earned a trio of victories against Baylor on the singles courts. No. 66 Shunsuke Mitsui won a first-set tiebreaker to rout Louis Bowden 7-5, 6-3. After falling in the first set, Newton won a second-set tiebreaker to force a third set, defeating #48 Martin Breysach 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-1. Li overcame a first-set loss to take down Marko Miladinovic in 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Li and Newton will face Oklahoma State in doubles Saturday at 12 p.m. ET. Mitsui, Li and Newton will go head-to-head with Texas Tech in singles competition following doubles play.
