Vols in the Pros: The Final Stretch

A number of Vols have been lighting it up on the hill and at the plate, while VFL Drew Gilbert was in the headlines a day ago, headlining the Mets' return for Justin Verlander in a blockbuster deal at the trade deadline.

Garrett Crochet – LHP, Chicago White SoxRehab Assignment with Triple-A Charlotte
Season: 10 App, 0-1, 3.60 ERA, 10 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 11 BB, 9 K, 2.10 WHIP, .256 BAA
Currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte for a shoulder strain but suffered a setback over the weekend. During his rehab assignment, Crochet has made two appearances, the first coming in Double-A Birmingham, and has struck out six hitters over 2.1 innings.
Yan Gomes – C, Chicago Cubs
Season: 72 G, 238 AB, 32 R, 68 H, 109 TB, 10 2B, 2 3B, 9 HR, 41 RBI, 13 BB, 48 K, 1 SB, .286 AVG, .327 OBP, .458 SLG
Been one of Chicago's hottest hitters in the month of July, posting a .329 average (25-for-76) with seven doubles, two triples, two homers and 17 RBIs in 23 games played. Gomes enters August on a nine-game hitting streak and ranks second on the team in average and third in OPS.
Gomes' impressive month was highlighted by a two-triple game on July 20 against the St. Louis Cardinals where he became the oldest Cubs player since 1905 to have multiple triples in a game.

Ben Joyce – RHP, Los Angeles Angels

Moved from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list on July 27th but avoided major injury.
Nick Senzel – CF, Cincinnati Reds
Season: 73 G, 217 AB, 34 R, 51 H, 8 2B, 8 HR, 36 RBI, 24 BB, 52 K, 5 SB, 2 CS, .235 AVG, .311 OBP, .382 SLG
Blasted his eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot, against Arizona on July 23 and has helped Cincinnati climb to the top of the NL Central standings to begin the month of August. Senzel kicked off the new month with a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored on August 1 against the Chicago Cubs.

Maui Ahuna – SS, ACL Giants Orange (Rookie SF)Assigned to the Arizona Complex League on July 30 and will make his professional debut with the ACL Giants Orange. Ahuna signed with the Giants after being selected in the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
Jordan Beck – OF, Hartford Yard Goats (Double-A COL)
Season: 90 G, 348 AB, 67 R, 97 H, 194 TB, 24 2B, 2 3B, 23 HR, 79 RBI, 51 BB, 93 K, 12 SB, 4 CS, .279 AVG, .368 OBP, .557 SLG
Played in 14 games thus far with Double-A Hartford and has 11 hits total, nine of those for extra bases. He homered in three consecutive games from July 18-20, including an incredible showing on July 19 where he went 4-for-5 with three doubles and a home run against Somerset. Beck currently ranks as the Rockies No. 4 prospect and is the No. 98 overall prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline's Top 100.

Chad Dallas – RHP, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Double-A TOR)
Season: 15 App, 15 GS, 5-1, 4.02 ERA, 78.1 IP, 54 H, 38 R, 35 ER, 38 BB, 89 K, 1.17 WHIP, .191 BAA
Posted five innings in each of his last two starts but was touched up a bit in each outing. Opposing hitters are still hitting just .191 off him this season and he holds a 3-1 record in 10 starts with New Hampshire.
Zach Daniels – OF, Corpus Christi Hooks (Double-A HOU)
Season: 51 G, 192 AB, 31 R, 57 H, 100 TB, 16 2B, 9 HR, 37 RBI, 16 BB, 71 K, 13 SB, 2 CS, .297 AVG, .351 OBP, .521 SLG
Has found his grove in recent weeks, going 18-for-61 (.295) since the All-Star break with six doubles, four home runs and 16 RBIs. In last week's series at San Antonio, Daniels went 9-for-24 (.375) with homers on July 25 and 27, while driving in nine runs during the week. He and the Hooks currently sit at 16-12 in the second half standings, just two games back of first place in the division. Daniels ranks as the No. 29 prospect in the Astros farm system.

Been a strong contributor for High-A Greenville since the All-Star break posting a .440 on-base percentage in 13 games. Ferguson has struck out just seven times in 13 games and is 3-for-3 on stolen-base attempts. Ferguson ranks seventh in the South Atlantic League in steals in 2023.

Assigned to the Arizona Complex League on August 1 and made his professional debut, striking out a pair of batters and recording the hold in the 6-1 victory.
Drew Gilbert – OF, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A NYM)
Season: 81 G, 310 AB, 57 R, 85 H, 142 TB, 19 2B, 1 3B, 12 HR, 38 RBI, 41 BB, 67 K, 10 SB, 3 CS, .274 AVG, .363 OBP, .458 SLG
Traded from Houston to the New York Mets as part of the blockbuster deal for Justin Verlander and was assigned to Double-A Binghamton where he becomes teammates with a former UT teammate in Blade Tidwell. In July, Gilbert posted eight multi-hit games, highlighted by a three-hit effort at San Antonio on July 28 where he had a home run, a double and three RBIs.
Gilbert ranks as the Mets' No. 4 prospect and is the No. 68 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He participated in the 2023 MLB All-Star Futures Game on July 8.

Zack Godley – RHP, Las Vegas Aviators (Triple-A OAK)
Season: 2 App, 2 GS, 1-0, 2.25 ERA, 12.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 9 BB, 13 K, 1.25 WHIP, .146 BAA
Signed a minor league contract with Oakland on July 19 after starting the season in independent ball. Assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas on July 20 and has since made two strong starts, including a quality start in his 2023 debut at Salt Lake where he earned the win. Godley has a .146 batting average against through two games this season.
Seth Halvorsen – RHP, ACL Rockies (Rookie COL)
Season: 2 App, 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1.29 WHIP, .300 BAA
Made his professional debut on July 27 against the ACL Cubs, tossing an inning of work out of the bullpen. Halvorsen has earned the win in both of his appearances and has yet to allow a run.
Sean Hunley – RHP, Montgomery Biscuits (Double-A TB)
Season: 19 App, 18 GS, 2-6, 5.05 ERA, 76.2 IP, 80 H, 50 R, 43 ER, 18 BB, 73 K, 1.28 WHIP, .272 BAA
Fired 10.1 innings since the All-Star break and has conceded just three walks in that time. Has struggled a bit, but still owns a 2.98 ERA and 0.99 WHIP at the Double-A level.

Drafted in the 17th round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the New York Mets.
Zach Joyce – RHP, Inland Empire 66ers (Single-A LAA)

Cortland Lawson – SS, Wilmington Blue Rocks (High-A WAS)
Season: 54 G, 183 AB, 35 R, 51 H, 67 TB, 8 2B, 4 3B, 25 RBI, 29 BB, 69 K, 10 SB, 2 CS, .279 AVG, .396 OBP, .366 SLG
Promoted to High-A Wilmington on August 1 after a strong season with Single-A Fredericksburg. Lawson led the team in on-base percentage among players with more than 25 games played and had a strong month of July, going 17-for-51 (.293) at the plate with 13 runs scored and nine RBIs.

Jackson Leath – RHP, Hickory Crawdads (High-A TEX)
Season: 25 App, 2-2, 2 HLD, 2 SV, 2.35 ERA, 30.2 IP, 24 H, 12 R, 8 ER, 13 BB, 34 K, 1.14 WHIP, .209 BAA
Has been on a roll since the All-Star break, posting five scoreless appearances totaling seven innings. Leath has also seen his usage increase in leverage, picking up a pair of saves in back-to-back appearances against Salem on July 18 and 21. Over his current five-game run, Leath has allowed just four hits and has not given up a walk while punching out nine batters in that time.
Leath was promoted from Single-A Down East to High-A Hickory on August 1.

Lipcius got back on the diamond with a bang, going 2-for-3 with a double and a home run against Fort Wayne on July 27. He currently is the No. 19 prospect in Detroit's system and has a big-league ETA of 2023 according to MLB Pipeline.
Trey Lipscomb – 3B, Harrisburg Senators (Double-A WAS)

Has continued to hit the ball well since being promoted to Double-A in June, posting a .310/.333/.494 slash-line with Harrisburg. Lipscomb finished a strong month of July with a solid series against Altoona, opening the six-game set with a home run, then posting multi-hit efforts on Friday and Saturday. He then kicked off the month of August with a double and a triple at Erie on August 1 followed by a four-hit, two-homer, six-RBI day on August 2. Lipscomb currently ranks as Washington's No. 20 prospect.

Will Mabrey – LHP, Amarillo Sod Poodles (Double-A ARI)

Found abundant success since earning a promotion to Double-A Amarillo, posting a 1-0 record and nailing down two saves in his only two opportunities. Mabrey also has a couple of holds to his credit and has a batting average against of .200. One of his saves came just a night ago on August 1 where he bolted down a 7-5 victory for Amarillo over Corpus Christi.

Mark McLaughlin – RHP, ACL White Sox (Rookie CWS)

Was very strong in his last start on the mound, firing four innings and allowing just one hit against the ACL Angels while striking out six batters.

Been a force at the plate for Cedar Rapids since the All-Star break posting four home runs and 16 RBIs in 15 games. In his first game back from the break, Ortega mashed two homers, drove in five runs and scored three in a 4-for-5 day at Beloit. He also jumpstarted the month of August on a strong note, posting a double, a home run and four RBIs on Tuesday in a 12-9 victory over Lansing.

Garrett Stallings – RHP, Norfolk Tides (Triple-A BAL)
Season: 20 App, 14 GS, 6-5, 4.40 ERA, 90.0 IP, 85 H, 47 R, 44 ER, 30 BB, 95 K, 1.28 WHIP, .249 BAA
Masterful in his last start against Charlotte on August 1, firing eight innings with just six hits given up and conceding no earned runs while fanning nine in a 6-3 victory. Stallings has a 3.93 ERA in Triple-A this season, posting a 3-3 record in his seven starts with Norfolk.

Hitting a strong 20-for-60 (.333) since the All-Star break with four doubles, a triple and a homer in that time. Stephenson continues to tear it up on the basepaths, swiping 45 bags this season, the second-highest total in the league.

Blade Tidwell – RHP, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A NYM)
Season: 17 App, 17 GS, 8-3, 3.09 ERA, 81.2 IP, 55 H, 32 R, 28 ER, 46 BB, 112 K, 1.24 WHIP, .190 BAA
Tidwell has been terrific since the All-Star break, posting a 1.59 ERA across three starts. The powerful right hander has logged 17 innings with just 11 hits surrendered and punched out 15 batters while picking up three victories on the hill. He was promoted from High-A Brooklyn to Double-A Binghamton on July 31 thanks to those successes. Tidwell currently ranks as the Mets' No. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Chase Wallace – RHP, Columbia Fireflies (Single-A KC)

Made major progressions and has had lots of success since the All-Star break posting 6.2 innings over four appearances and allowing just one run and four hits in those games. Wallace also notched his first hold of the season his last time out, posting a perfect eighth inning in a 3-1 victory over Carolina on July 30. For the entire month of July, Wallace has a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings, striking out 11 hitters during that span.
