Johannus Monday Advances in Doubles Draw at Wimbledon
July 06, 2023 | Men's Tennis
Rising Tennessee men's tennis senior Johannus Monday logged the most significant victory of his young tennis career Thursday in the first round of the gentlemen's doubles draw at The Championships, Wimbledon.
In the opening round of doubles, Monday and doubles partner Jake Fearnley defeated Andre Goransson (ATP 70) of Sweden and Ben McLachlan (ATP 75) from Japan, 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
Goransson and McLachlan took the first set, 6-1, in 22 minutes of play. The second set, which totaled 51 minutes, went to a tiebreaker and was served out by Monday, with the British pair winning the breaker, 7-2.
No breaks were earned during the second set by either duo, but Monday and Fearnley jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker and never looked back.
That momentum carried over to set three, as Monday and Fearnley went up a break at 3-2 in the third, and soon after held service for a 4-2 advantage. In the 10th game of the set, Monday's powerful left-handed serve secured the victory in his first main draw Grand Slam appearance. In all, the match lasted six minutes shy of two hours.
Monday and Fearnley's opponents for the second round are TBD, with that match to be played not before Saturday.
