#12 Vols Outhit #5 Arkansas but Fall, 6-3
April 15, 2023 | Baseball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Despite outhitting No. 5/5 Arkansas, the No. 12/16 Tennessee Volunteers fell 6-3 on Saturday night at Baum-Walker Stadium as the Razorbacks clinched the series.
The Vols finished with a 7-4 edge in hits but those hits came in timely situations for the Hogs, who went 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position while UT was 0-for-8.
For the second night in a row, a Jared Dickey leadoff home run opened the scoring. After going deep on the fourth pitch of the game on Friday, Dickey needed just three pitches to put the Vols on top on Saturday, blasting a 1-1 pitch over the right-field fence for his seventh homer of the season.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Jace Bohrofen answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Razorbacks a 2-1 lead after one.
After giving up the home run in the first, starting pitch Chase Dollander settled in and was dominant over the next three innings, retiring 11 straight Arkansas hitters at one point. An error on a dropped fly ball, a single and a walk in the top of the fifth ended the night for the right hander, who surrendered just two hits and had eight strikeouts but allowed three runs (two earned) in the loss.
After the Razorbacks took a 3-1 lead in the fifth, UT was able to cut the deficit to one in the sixth on a Blake Burke solo homer to left field, his 13th of the season.
Tennessee had a chance to tie the game one inning later after Christian Scott reached on a pinch-hit single and worked himself into scoring position after stealing second base. However, a flyout by Dickey and a strikeout by Dylan Dreiling ended the threat.Â
The Hogs essentially put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on an errant pickoff attempt and a pair of two-out singles to extend their lead to 6-2.
The Big Orange tried to rally in the ninth as Kavares Tears walked to lead off the inning and came around to score thanks to three wild pitches, during which Scott worked a 13-pitch walk with two outs. He made it into scoring position, but, as they had all night, the Vols could not plate the runner, ending the night on a deep fly out to left field.
