Lady Vol 2V8 Highlights Senior Day Against Alabama and Oklahoma
April 01, 2023 | Rowing
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Celebrating Senior Day, Tennessee took on Big 12 foes Alabama and Oklahoma on Saturday morning at Melton Hill Lake.
The 18th-ranked Lady Vols swept the Sooners in all six races, while the 2V8 crew, which is the reigning Big 12 Boat of the Week, continued its hot start to the season by also garnering a win against the Crimson Tide. Alabama and Oklahoma both received votes in this week's coaches poll.
"I think that what we're seeing from the team is a lot of good hard work," Head Coach Lisa Glenn said. "There are some tactical pieces that need work, as they all do with this time of the season. Great racing on the part of all three teams that were here. We do see Alabama next week and two weeks from now and then four weeks from now and so it's going to be a real good challenge for us and for them to really build the strength of our conference. So today, it was good. Congrats to the 2V8; it was a great race on their part. It was solid racing for the other crews as well. We've got some things to tweak and we'll do that and we'll keep building for the races to come. It's still early in the season, so that's exciting. You're hungry for more when you come out on the short end of it. We're looking forward to next week and the competitions to come.
"What you really want from seniors is a group of athletes who get to the point in their final year that they really own a lot of what we're about and they are invested in leaving the program better than when they found it. This is a group of people who I can solidly say have done that and continue to do that. It's bittersweet, of course, to recognize them, but it's fun too because they're such a great group of athletes."
Abigail Bacci coxed the lineup of Kate Schildmeyer, Casey Chronister, Beatrice Bernard, Alex Pidgeon, Riley Ferdelman, Paige Reymann, Sheya Lavin and Haley Savastano to a time of 6:46.9. The boat crossed the finish line nearly eight seconds ahead of Alabama and 14 seconds ahead of Oklahoma. For the season, the boat owns an 8-2 record.
In the 1V8 race, the Tennessee crew of Elizabeth Walley, Emma Seawright, Natalia Loram, Katie Rice, Reagan Long, Logan Yates, Gabriela Natale, Sydney Pardy and Erin Gifford split a battle with the Crimson Tide and Sooners. The lineup bested Oklahoma by seven seconds thanks to a 6:39.9 effort but crossed the finish line in second just four seconds behind Alabama.
During the varsity four heats, the Big Orange 1V4 (7:44.74) and 2V4 (7:32.84) both earned second-place finishes in their respective races. Also competing in the 2V4 race, Tennessee's 3V4 clocked a 7:42.85 mark to top the Sooners' 2V4.
Rounding out the day, the Lady Vol 3V8 posted a time of 6:59.18, while the 4V8 clocked in at 7:08.42. Both crews finished in second in their races.
Up next, Tennessee hits the road next weekend, traveling to Sarasota, Florida, for the Big Ten Invitational on April 7-8. The regatta will feature some of the top teams from around the nation.
