#2/4 Lady Vols Win Streak Ends at 20 Games
March 25, 2023 | Softball
KNOXVILLE, TENN. – The No.2/4 Lady Vols softball team dropped their first game since early February, falling to Alabama, 4-2, Saturday night in front of a second-consecutive sellout crowd of 2,283 at Sherri Lee Parker Stadium.
Tennessee (25-2, 7-1 SEC) was held in check, scoring just two runs on five hits. Crimson Tide pitcher Alex Salter tossed a complete game with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. With the win, she moves to 4-1 on the season.
Freshman Karlyn Pickens pitched six innings for the Lady Vols, giving up four runs on eight hits and fanning eight. She suffered her second loss of the season, moving to 6-2 on the year.
After only scoring one run Friday, Alabama (24-9, 2-3 SEC) matched its effort in only four pitches, as Kali Heivilin homered in the top of the first to give the Tide an early 1-0 lead.
Tennessee struck back immediately as it pushed across two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Senior Kiki Milloy walked and advanced to third thanks to a Lair Beautae single up in the middle. Beautae then put herself in scoring position by stealing second before junior Zaida Puni knocked a two-run single to put UT ahead 2-1.
After a scoreless second inning, Alabama regained its lead with two runs in the top of the third. A single up the middle by leadoff hitter Kenleigh Cahalan evened the game followed by Kristen White scoring off of a fielder's choice to put the Tide on top 3-2 after the third.
Alabama threatened to tack on more runs in the third – loading the bases with two outs – but Pickens held her ground, getting out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the Lady Vols in striking distance.
The Crimson Tide extended their lead in the sixth, as eighth-hole hitter Jenna Johnson hit an RBI single to center field, sending Emma Broadfoot home, putting the Tide up 4-2.
Graduate transfer Payton Gottshall came in to relieve Pickens in the seventh, striking out one and retiring all three batters she faced.
In the bottom of the seventh, leadoff hitter Mackenzie Donihoo drove one to left field, where Johnson made a diving catch to record the game's final out.
