Karlyn Pickens Named SEC Pitcher of the Week
March 21, 2023 | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After picking up two wins over the weekend on the road at No. 10 LSU, Tennessee freshman pitcher Karlyn Pickens has been named the SEC Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Tennessee played four games last week with Pickens appearing in three of them. At LSU, her two wins helped lead the Lady Vols to their first sweep of a top-10 opponent since 2015. The hard-throwing righty was stellar on Saturday versus the Tigers, tossing another complete-game one-hit shutout – her second in SEC play. She fanned nine LSU hitters en route to the victory.
She also appeared in Sunday's game, throwing 1.2 innings – earning the win – and striking out another three batters.
This is Pickens' fourth weekly honor in a row after picking up SEC Freshman of the Week accolades over the previous three weeks.
The Weaverville, North Carolina, native is a part of one of the top pitching staffs in the nation. Tennessee's staff is made up of Payton Gottshall, Charli Orsini, Ashley Rogers, Nicola Simpson and Ryleigh White.
As a group, the six pitchers hold a nation-leading 0.62 ERA and have combined for 17 shutouts – a mark that leads the SEC and is tied for No. 1 in the country. Pickens and Rogers have thrown a perfect game and a no-hitter, respectively, while the staff has also tallied five one-hit ballgames.
Through 157 innings, UT has allowed just 13 extra-base hits and has only conceded 15 runs.
The Lady Vols return home to Sherri Parker Lee Stadium this weekend Friday through Sunday as they welcome Alabama to Rocky Top.
