June 09, 2022 | Softball
BRAMPTON, ONTARIO — Tennessee freshman pitcher Nicola Simpson, a dual citizen of Canada and the United States, is one of 32 athletes attending the 2022 Canada Softball Women's National Team selection camp this week. The week-long tryout runs June 8-12 in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
Â
Following the selection camp, the coaching staff will select their roster for the Women's National Team Celebration Tour stops in Ontario (June 16-18) and Saskatchewan (June 29 to July 1), the Canada Cup International Softball Championship (June 20-26) and the World Games (July 9-13).
Simpson is joined at the selection camp by her older sister, Kaia Simpson, a standout pitcher for UC San Diego. Earlier this season, the siblings both appeared in an 8-0 Lady Vol victory over the Tritons at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, California.
The Lady Vol right-hander made 14 appearances with two starts during her rookie season on Rocky Top, totaling 22 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts and a 2-0 record. Simpson's two victories came in back-to-back weekends after strong relief outings against Texas A&M (4/16) and East Carolina (4/24). She also posted solid performances against a pair of top-10 teams, going a career-long 4.2 innings vs. No. 10 Arkansas (3/19) with three strikeouts and spinning 3.0 innings with one earned run against No. 1 Oklahoma (2/26).
