Tennessee to Host at 2023 ITA Kickoff Weekend
June 15, 2022 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For a second consecutive season, the Tennessee men's tennis team is set to serve as one of 15 hosts at the 2023 ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Â
Joining the Vols in Knoxville is No. 34 Oklahoma, No. 48 Charlotte and No. 61 Louisiana.
Â
The field was decided via the ITA Men's Kickoff Weekend Draft, with teams from around the country receiving the opportunity to choose which host site they would prefer to play at. The 15 host sites were predetermined based on 2022 year-end rankings. Selection order was based on year-end finish, starting with the No. 16 ranked team and running until all of the spots were filled.
Â
This marks the first time since 2009-12 in which the Vols have hosted the ITA Kickoff Weekend in consecutive seasons, also doing so in 2021.
Â
The 15th annual running of the event will take place Friday and Saturday, January 27-28, 2023 in Knoxville. The winner of the Tennessee Regional will then advance to the ITA Indoor National Championships in Champaign, Illinois.
Â
Tennessee is 19-7 all-time at the ITA Kickoff Weekend since the event's inception in 2009 and advanced to the ITA Indoor National Championships six consecutive times from 2009-2014, also doing so in each of the previous two seasons.
Â
In the 2022 edition of the Kickoff Weekend, the Vols used a pair of 4-0 victories over Old Dominion and Memphis to advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships for a second consecutive season and the second time since 2014. Martim Prata clinched match point for the Big Orange in that win over in-state foe Memphis with a straight-set singles victory on court three.
Â
Oklahoma finished its 2022 dual slate with a 15-11 record. Charlotte went 17-7, while Louisiana finished the season 17-6.
