May 04, 2022 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Five members of the Tennessee men's tennis program have earned bids to the 2022 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, as was announced Tuesday. Graduate student Adam Walton and sophomore Johannus Monday qualified for the Singles Championship, while Walton and senior Pat Harper, as well as freshman Shunsuke Mitsui and senior Emile Hudd qualified for the Doubles Championship.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs May 19-22. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will serve as host.
Walton earned the No. 3 overall seed in singles, while Monday was seeded in the No. 9-16 category. Tennessee's two doubles teams qualified as at-large selections. Walton and Monday's top-16 seeding earns them ITA All-America status, to be formally announced at a later date. For Walton and Monday, it's their second consecutive season earning All-America status in singles.
Â
Tennessee is tied for the nation's second-most individuals in the Singles and Doubles Championships this year, with five total and is one of just six programs to qualify five or six individuals for the event (including alternates). In addition, Tennessee is one of six teams nationally to place two doubles pairs in the this year's NCAA Championships.
In all, 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams from around the country will compete in the Division I Men's Tennis Championships.
All matches will be played the best-of-three sets, with no-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.
The Knoxville Regional of the NCAA Tournament is set to begin this weekend, with Tennessee taking on Tennessee Tech Friday, May 6 at 1 p.m. ET. With a win Friday, Tennessee would advance to the second round of the tournament, facing the winner of Friday's Duke vs. Memphis match Saturday, May 7 at 1 p.m. ET.
