May 27, 2022 | Men's Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Tennessee men's tennis graduate student Adam Walton saw his run in the NCAA Singles Championship come to a close Friday afternoon in Champaign, narrowly dropping a three-set battle to Florida's second-ranked Ben Shelton, 7-6(3), 3-6, 5-7.
Walton is the fifth Vol in program history to reach the semifinal round of the NCAA Singles Championship, and his four wins in the NCAA Singles draw this week ties him with Rhyne Williams (2010-11) for the fourth-most career singles wins at the NCAA Championship in program history, with six.
Third-ranked Walton, a back-to-back ITA Singles All-American, broke Shelton twice in the opening set, but Shelton broke back each time. That was before Walton emerged with the set victory after taking the tiebreaker, 7-3.
Shelton responded by taking the second set, 6-3. In the third set, Walton went up a break at 2-1 and remained a break up on Shelton at 4-3, before Shelton's break back evened set three at 4-all. A pair of holds had the set tied at 5-5, before Shelton held and then broke for a 7-5 set victory.
Walton concludes his Tennessee career as one of the most accomplished Vols in program history. The Aussie earned first team All-SEC honors in 2019, 2021 and 2022. In each of his final two seasons as a Vol, Walton earned ITA Singles All-America status and was a Doubles All-American in 2021, winning the NCAA Doubles National Championship with Pat Harper that season.
Walton also finishes his collegiate career with the fifth-most combined singles and doubles wins in Tennessee program history, boasting 225 combined victories. In Tennessee's win over Florida State in the 2022 NCAA Super Regionals, Walton became the sixth Vol in program history to accrue 100 singles wins and 100 doubles wins in a career.
Additionally, Walton lands at fifth on Tennessee all-time singles wins list with 124 career singles triumphs and is eighth on the program's doubles list, with 101 doubles wins.
