Men's Tennis Central: NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA team semifinals and a successful dual season for the Tennessee men's tennis team, five Vols are back in action this week at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The 64-man singles tournament is slated to begin Monday morning, while the 32-pair doubles competition will commence Tuesday at the at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Center in Champaign, Illinois.
Graduate student Adam Walton and sophomore Johannus Monday will represent the Big Orange in singles competition, while Walton and senior Pat Harper, as well as freshman Shunsuke Mitsui and senior Emile Hudd will compete in the doubles draw.
Live stats for singles and doubles will be provided by Illinois and can be found here. There are also still a number of tickets available for the duration of the men's and women's singles and doubles championships which can be purchased here.

PREVIEWING SINGLES
Walton holds a 22-7 overall singles record this year and is the tournament's No. 3 overall seed. He is matched up with VCU's Charles Bertimon in round one. That match will begin at 11 a.m. ET on Monday.
Monday is 25-8 in singles this season and opens his quest for the singles title as a No. 9-16 seed. He will face Alafia Ayeni of Cornell in the first round Monday at 1 p.m. ET.
PREVIEWING DOUBLES
In the doubles bracket, the Vols have two duos competing. Hudd and Mitsui (27-11 as a pairing this season) will battle Justin Boulais and James Trotter of Ohio State in Tuesday's opening round of doubles. In addition, Tennessee's No. 1 doubles pair and reigning NCAA Doubles National Champions Walton and Harper (17-7 together this season) will begin their pursuit of a second consecutive doubles title by facing Ole Miss' Finn Reynolds and Lukas Engelhardt.
MATCH FORMAT
All singles and doubles matches will be best two-out-of-three sets. In doubles play, a 10-point super tiebreak will be used in lieu of a third set.
TENNESSEE AT THE INDIVIDUAL SINGLES AND DOUBLES TOURNAMENTS
Current head coach Chris Woodruff stands as the lone Vol to capture the individual singles crown (1993), while a trio of doubles teams have walked away with the doubles national title. Walton and Harper took home the doubles crown in 2021, while Rodney Harmon and Mel Purcell were the first to do it in 1980. Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese also did so in 2014.
Overall, the Vols have accrued four individual champions, five total finalists, and four total semifinalists since 1966.
