#12 Tennessee Erupts With Four Homers In 10-1 Win At Ole Miss
May 01, 2022 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Tennessee offense erupted for 10 runs on 11 hits to earn a run-rule victory over Ole Miss, 10-1 in six innings, Sunday night at the OM Softball Complex. The result evened the series between the Lady Vols and Rebels and sets up a rubber match Monday night on SEC Network at 7 p.m. ET.
Highlighted by a pair of bombs from super senior infielder Ashley Morgan, Tennessee (35-14, 12-7 SEC) crushed four home runs and roped three doubles in the clinical victory. Sophomore outfielder Rylie West went 3-for-4 at the dish with a three-run homer and an RBI double, while rookie designated player Lair Beautae posted a double and a solo shot for the Big Orange Sunday evening.
Senior right-hander Ashley Rogers tossed all six innings for her fourth complete game of the season, tallying six strikeouts with one earned run on four hits. The Athens, Tennessee, native held the Rebels hitless through the first three frames and ultimately left six runners stranded throughout the contest.
Tennessee scored two runs on four hits to gain an early edge in the top of the first. Beautae led the game off with a double to left center and was brought home by her classmate McKenna Gibson with an RBI single through the left side. Super senior shortstop Ivy Davis doubled the Lady Vol lead when she knocked an RBI infield single that allowed sophomore Zaida Puni to score from third after reaching base on a one-out walk.
West and Morgan went back-to-back to push Tennessee's lead to six runs over Ole Miss (35-15, 9-11 SEC) in the top of the third. After Kelcy Leach and Davis got aboard with back-to-back walks, West launched a 3-1 pitch to dead center for a three-run blast and her eighth homer run of the year. Morgan followed suit with a solo shot to right that made it 6-0 for the Big Orange in the middle of the third.
The Rebels broke up UT's shutout and no-hit bid with a run on two hits in the bottom of the fourth. After center fielder Abbey Latham led off with a double through the left side, the Rebel senior scored on Catelyn Riley's RBI groundout to second base and cut Tennessee's lead to 6-1.
Beautae collected her second extra-base hit in the top of the fifth, leading off the frame with a no-doubt mammoth shot to center field that increased UT's advantage back to six. The Lady Vols pushed their run total to double digits for the ninth time this season in the top of the sixth, seeing an RBI double from West and Morgan's two-run homer to right field provide a 10-1 lead for the Big Orange.
With its 14th run-rule victory in sight, Rogers retired three of four batters faced in the bottom of the sixth and ended the game with a swinging strikeout, her sixth of the night.
UP NEXT: Monday's rubber match is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET from the Ole Miss Softball Complex and will be televised on SEC Network. An audio broadcast will be available for listening on UTSports.com and can be heard locally in Knoxville on AM 990.
