Ashe’s Furious Sprint Highlights Split Squad Saturday for Track & Field

PHILADELPHIA - True freshman Favour Ashe ran the fifth-fastest all-conditions time in collegiate history at 9.79 (+3.0) in the men's 100-meter dash at the LSU Invitational to highlight a terrific Saturday of action for the Vols and Lady Vols.
Ashe's time is the fastest in the nation this season and makes him the top qualifier for the NCAA East Regional. The Ughelli, Nigeria, native won the 100m race at LSU by .23 seconds over second-place Da'Marcus Fleming.
At the Penn Relays, Latavia Maines and Jordan West earned second-place finishes in the women's and men's shot put. Maines threw 17.51m (57-5.5) to claim her second-place spot in the College Women's Shot Put Championship. In the Men's Shot Put Championship, West tossed 19.64m (64-5.25).
On the track at historic Franklin Field, UT wrapped up its stay at the 126th Penn Relays with the women's 4x1,500-meter relay and the men's 4xMile relay. Katie Thronson, Sydney Seymour, Brooke Dixon and Olivia Janke finished eighth at 17:39.48 in the 4x1,500m, while Riley Buchholz, Alex Crigger, Conner Hawkins and Thomas Gardiner placed 13th in 16:46.52.
4x100 FLYIN'
At the LSU Invitational, the men's 4x100-meter relay posted a third-place time of 38.99 seconds, which ranks as the 10th-fastest in the country and ninth-quickest in program history. The relay team of Wayne Pinnock, Ashe, Carey McLeod and Emmanuel Bynum put together the team's fastest time in the event this season.
SOARING THROUGH THE AIR
Pinnock and McLeod, piggybacking off of their excellent men's 4x100 run, earned a 2-3 finish in the men's long jump. The top collegiate finishers, they soared to distances of 8.02m (26-03.75) and 7.99m (26-02.75). McLeod's mark is tied for the seventh-best jump in the nation this season - Pinnock's top leap this year is 8.06m (26-5.5) which ranks third nationally.
HOOTS ON TOP
Redshirt junior Joe Hoots won his first event of the season in the 800m, clocking a 1:49.44, edging second-place finisher Parker McBride by .01 seconds. Hoots' time is a personal best for the Nashville native.
CHARISMA CLAIMS NO. 2
In the women's triple jump, Charisma Taylor turned in a distance of 13.51m (44-4), a new personal record, to take second place in the event. With the mark, Taylor is now the second-best performer in the outdoor triple jump in Lady Vol history, breaking a tie for second she shared with Alonie Sutton at 13.29m (43-7.25).
