Four Vols Receive All-SEC Honors
April 29, 2022 | Men's Tennis
Four members of the Tennessee men's tennis team have earned postseason recognition from the Southeastern Conference head coaches, the conference announced Friday.
Â
Graduate student Adam Walton earned first-team All-SEC acclaim for the third time in his Tennessee career, having also done so in 2019 and 2021.
Â
Sophomore Johannus Monday was named a first-team All-SEC member for the second time in as many seasons, while senior Emile Hudd garnered second-team All-SEC honors in his first season with the Vols.
Â
Freshman Shunsuke Mitsui joined Hudd as a second-team All-SEC selection and became the ninth Vol in program history to make the SEC All-Freshman Team. It marks Tennessee's second year in a row placing a Vol on the All-Freshman Team, with Monday doing so in 2021.
Â
Tennessee's four recipients of SEC first and second team honors mark the program's most in a single season since also having four in 2011.
Â
The Vols have accumulated seven first-team All-SEC honors since head coach Chris Woodruff took the helm at his alma mater and have placed multiple student-athletes on the All-SEC First Team four times since 2014, doing so in back-to-back campaigns.
Â
Walton stands seventh on Tennessee's all-time singles wins list, with 116 entering his final NCAA Tournament. He has tallied 18 singles wins this year, with 15 of those coming in dual matches and 13 at the No. 1 singles position. The Aussie, currently holding a career-best national ranking of No. 3 in singles, is one singles win away from tying Luca Wiedenmann for sixth place at 117 victories.
Â
On the doubles courts, Walton is 16-6 (9-1 SEC) in dual matches and 20-7 overall this season. Walton and doubles partner Pat Harper recorded a perfect 9-0 SEC record at No. 1 doubles this spring. The duo is ranked No. 19 in the latest ITA doubles rankings. At 99 career doubles triumphs, Walton needs one more win in doubles to become the sixth Vol in program history to join the coveted 100/100 club with 100 singles wins and 100 doubles wins.
Â
Monday, ranked in the singles top-10 at No. 9, has logged a 16-3 (.842) dual singles record this spring, going 24-6 in overall singles action. He recently collected the 31st career win at the No. 2 singles position. Monday posted a stellar 15-4 (4-0 SEC) record at No. 3 doubles this dual season, including a 12-1 mark with graduate student Mark Wallner. Overall, Monday is 56-15 (.789) in singles action and 46-19 (.708) in doubles since arriving on Rocky Top.
Â
In his first season in Knoxville, Hudd's road to second-team All-SEC included an 18-7 (9-3 SEC) dual singles record, going 27-9 in overall singles play. He is 10-4 (4-1 SEC) at No. 3 singles thus far and ranked No. 66 by the ITA. In doubles competition, Hudd has posted a 13-8 (5-3 SEC) mark in dual matches and is 26-10 overall, dating to the fall. Hudd is 11-4 (4-1 SEC) at No. 2 doubles with Mitsui.
Â
Mitsui's 32 singles wins this season are tied with Monday for eighth on Tennessee's all-time freshman singles wins list. Having also registered 29 doubles wins this year, Mitsui stands tied-for-fifth on Tennessee's all-time freshman doubles wins list.
Â
Through SEC Tournament action, Mitsui's 22-4 dual singles record gives him the most dual singles wins among all SEC players this spring.
Â
Of those 22 dual singles wins, 18 came in straight sets, with Mitsui winning 50 of 62 completed singles sets. In the months of March and April, Mitsui logged a 13-2 singles record and his .800 singles win percentage is tied with Woodruff (1992) and Monday (2021) for the fourth-best freshman singles winning percentage in program history (minimum 30 matches).
Â
Mitsui is 29-10 in overall doubles, including a 13-8 (5-3 SEC) mark in dual matches with Hudd. He is currently ranked No. 21 in doubles with Hudd.
