Davis Tabbed SEC Co-Player of the Week
April 19, 2022 | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference office announced Tuesday afternoon that Lady Vol super senior Ivy Davis has been named SEC Co-Player of the Week. The shortstop from Huntington Beach, California led the Lady Vols to a 4-0 record on the week, batting a team-high .714 average as No. 14 Tennessee topped Western Carolina on the road and swept Texas A&M at home in a three-game set.
Â
Davis went 5-for-7 at the plate between the four contests, slugging 1.714 with one double, two homers and seven RBIs. With four HBP and one walk, she reached base safely 10 times in 12 plate appearances for an .833 on-base percentage and scored three runs for the Lady Vols as the team put together a four-game win streak.
Â
One day after her 23rd birthday, Davis mashed two home runs at Western Carolina on Wednesday with a solo shot and a two-run blast to lead the Big Orange to a 9-1 road victory. She combined with freshman infielder McKenna Gibson as the first Lady Vol teammates to homer twice in the same game since April 2, 2013.
Â
Davis opened the A&M series with a second consecutive multi-hit outing on Saturday, roping a go-ahead double and a game-tying single before Zaida Puni's two-run bomb walked it off. Davis then posted two RBIs in Sunday's win over the Aggies with a one-run single and bases-loaded HBP.
Â
The super senior shortstop rounded out her strong week reaching base in all three plate appearances Monday night with two HBP and a walk. She also logged a 1.000 fielding percentage over the course of the A&M series with five putouts and six assists, including back-to-back fielder's choice plays to help UT escape a bases-loaded jam on Sunday.
Â
Davis is Tennessee's first SEC Player of the Week honoree this season and the first for the Lady Vols since Ashley Morgan earned the award on April 27, 2021. Tuesday's announcement marks the second time this season that UT has taken home a weekly honor from the league office as Ashley Rogers was tabbed SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 14.
Â
Tennessee's homestand continues Wednesday night when the Lady Vols take on No. 3 Virginia Tech at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The national spotlight will shine on Rocky Top as the top-15 matchup airs on ESPN, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
