Men’s Golf Central: Hayt Invitational
March 26, 2022 | Men's Golf
The 19th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team is back in action after a quick turnaround this weekend, traveling to the Sunshine State for the annual Hayt Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, at Sawgrass Country Club.
The Vols are set to play three total rounds in Florida—teeing off the weekend with 36 holes on Sunday and then a final 18-hole round on Monday.
According to Golfweek's college rankings, eight of the 15 participating teams in the Hayt Invitational are ranked inside the top 50. At No. 19, Tennessee is the highest ranked team in the field.
The Hayt Invitational marks Tennessee's fourth tournament of the spring. After a third-place finish at the Puerto Rico Classic and a sixth-place finish at the Cabo Collegiate, the Vols finished ninth at the National Invitational Tournament in Arizona last weekend.
Registering his fourth top-20 finish of the season, Spencer Cross led the way for the Vols, shooting a three-round total of 6-under and tying for 16th place. Bryce Lewis came in just two strokes behind Cross, shooting 4-under and finishing tied for 23rd place. Lewis shot par or better during all three rounds—securing his third straight top-25 finish.
From 2007 to 2019, Tennessee appeared in the annual Hayt Invitational every year. The Vols were also schedule to compete in the event in 2020 before it was canceled due to COVID-19.
In the Vols' most recent appearance in 2019, Tennessee took home the team championship—the third during Brennan Webb's first season at the helm of the program. In addition to Tennessee's team championship, Hunter Wolcott took home the individual title—shooting a three-round total of 5-under.
