VFL Rhian Wilkinson To Be Inducted Into Canada Soccer Hall of Fame
March 02, 2022 | Soccer
Former Tennessee standout Rhian Wilkinson (2000-03) is headed to the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame, as announced Tuesday by Canada Soccer. She joins former national team stars Patrice Bernier and Martina Franko as inductees into Canada Soccer Hall of Fame's Class of 2022.
Â
As a member of the national team, she represented Canada at four FIFA World Cups and three Olympic Games. During that time, she captured a CONCACAF title (2010), two Olympic bronze medals (2012, 2016), and a fourth-place finish at the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup. In total, she earned 181 caps for Canada.
A native of Baie d'Urfe, Quebec, Canada, Wilkinson was named Thorns FC head coach in the fall of 2021. Prior to that, she was an assistant for the England Women's National Team, serving as part of the coaching staff for Team Great Britain at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She also spent time as an assistant coach for Canada's Women's National Team in 2019 and 2020, working with the senior team during the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. Â Â
Wilkinson was inducted into the Tennessee Lady Volunteer Hall of Fame in 2013. A three-time All-SEC performer, she still holds all-time program records for assists in a single season (15) and a career (32). Her 88 career points (28 goals, 32 assists) rank second in UT history, while her 28 career goals are the third-most by a Lady Vol.
Â
"Canada Soccer is honored to welcome Patrice Bernier, Martina Franko, and Rhian Wilkinson to the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022," said Dr. Nick Bontis, Canada Soccer President. "Bernier was a Canadian champion and Men's National Team hero while both Franko and Wilkinson were notable members of our Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup teams with the Women's National Team. All three Canadian heroes are deserving of this great honor in recognition of their careers as professional players."
The Canada Soccer Hall of Fame honors Canadian players that have played the game with excellence at the international and club level. With the three new selections for 2022, the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame now features 205 honored members: 140 players, 13 coaches/managers, 10 referees, and 42 builders.
