Vols Receive Top Spot in ITA Computer Rankings, Six Individuals Ranked
February 24, 2022 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In the ITA's first computer rankings of 2022, the Tennessee men's tennis team received the No. 1 national distinction Wednesday, with four singles players ranked inside the top 125 and two doubles pairs inside the top 60 of the Division I rankings, the Association announced Thursday.
The Vols are in the top-five of the ITA rankings for a 19th consecutive week. That streak is the second-longest active top-five streak in the nation, behind only Baylor by a single week.
Tennessee wrapped up its indoor season with an 11-2 record, including a 5-2 mark against ranked opponents and a runner-up finish at the ITA Indoor National Championships. Along with going 7-0 at home to begin dual season, three of Tennessee's five ranked wins have come against top-10 foes.
SEC Player of the Week Johannus Monday earned the national singles ranking of No. 6 Thursday, having logged a 10-1 dual singles record and an 8-1 mark at the No. 2 singles slot thus far.
Graduate student Adam Walton earned the No. 32 ranking in singles. The Aussie has begun dual season with a 6-2 singles record, going 4-2 at the top of Tennessee's singles lineup.
Emile Hudd, a senior, earned a singles ranking of No. 51 after an 8-2 start to the year in singles during the indoor season, along with a 5-2 mark at the No. 3 singles position. UT graduate student Mark Wallner was named the nation's No. 103 singles player in the updated rankings.
Two of Tennessee's doubles pairs also received ITA rankings Thursday, with Shunsuke Mitsui and Hudd earning the No. 9 doubles ranking, while Pat Harper and Walton came in at No. 57.
Hudd and Mitsui hold a 6-3 record in doubles this dual season, going 5-2 at the No. 2 position. Harper and Walton logged a mark of 5-4 to begin the year, with a 3-3 mark at No. 1 and 2-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The ITA Rankings Algorithm is based on an accumulation of win points and loss points, accounting for a win-loss record, the strength of schedule, and the depth/significance of wins and losses. As the season progresses, the value of each win and loss adjusts to reflect the most recent ranking of the opponent.
The top-ranked Vols return to action on Tuesday, March 1 at home against Furman, for Tennessee's final non-conference match of the regular season. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET from Barksdale Stadium.
