#15 Lady Vols Drop Pair of Ranked Matchups Friday At SPC Invite
February 18, 2022 | Softball
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Taking on two consensus top-15 opponents at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, the No. 15/18 Lady Vols fell to No. 5/6 Washington and No. 12/15 Clemson on Friday at the Eddie C. Moore Complex by scores of 11-0 and 4-3, respectively.
GAME 1 - No. 15/18 Tennessee 0, No. 5/6 Washington 11
The Washington Huskies powered past the Lady Vols with four home runs in Friday's opener en route to an 11-0 run-rule victory. UW pitcher Gabbie Plain, a member of Australia's 2020 Olympic team, limited Tennessee to two hits on the afternoon as super seniors Ivy Davis and Kelcy Leach posted one single apiece.
The Huskies gained an early two-run edge with a pair of solo home runs in the first and second innings. Third baseman Baylee Klingler and designated player Sarah Willis each went opposite field to gain a 2-0 lead for Washington through two.
UW added two more in the top of the third, beginning with a leadoff home run to deep right center from left fielder Sami Reynolds. Willis added another RBI to her tally with a bloop single to left center that scored catcher Olivia Johnson from second.
Washington capitalized on some defensive miscues for Tennessee in the top of the fourth, tallying five runs on one hit and four errors in the frame. The next inning, Klingler hit her second home run with a two-run shot to right field that gave the Huskies an 11-run lead and cemented the final score.
GAME 2 - No. 15/18 Tennessee 3, No. 12/15 Clemson 4 (9 Inn.)
An inspiring performance from graduate pitcher Erin Edmoundson and clutch heroics at the plate from Kiki Milloy made for a thrilling Friday night contest against No. 12 Clemson, but the Lady Vols fell in extra innings to the Tigers, 4-3.
Edmoundson went 8.2 innings, threw 150 pitches and notched her second double-digit strikeout effort of the season with 11 Ks Friday night. Milloy recorded two solo home runs on the night, one to lead off the game and one to tie the game in the seventh and force extras.
Tennessee's All-American center fielder provided the initial spark for the Lady Vols with her second leadoff home run of the tournament, blasting a ball high and deep to right center to put the Lady Vols ahead 1-0 early on. The long ball went down as Milloy's 10th hit of the season to lead the Big Orange offensively.
The Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom of the second when catcher JoJo Hyatt poked a single through the left side that scored runners from second and third.
UT tied it up the next frame with McKenna Gibson's first career RBI triple. The freshman from Santa Clarita, California, sent a ball to the gap in right center that brought in super senior Ivy Davis all the way from first to make it a 2-2 ballgame.
The game did not remain tied for long, as Clemson saw its right fielder Marissa Giumbarda hammer a ball to left for a solo home run that put the Tigers ahead 3-2.
After three consecutive scorleess frames, Milloy delivered a game-tying strike with her second home run of the night in the top of the seventh. Facing a hitter's count at 3-1, she sent an opposite field rocket to right center that evened the score at three apiece.
Edmoundson retired the side in order to force extra innings in the bottom half, dealing back-to-back strikeouts before a flyout to center was caught by Milloy and sent the game to the eighth. Edmoundson dealt two more strikeouts her next time out to run her game's tally to 11.
Clemson walked the game off in the bottom of the ninth when freshman infielder Maddie Moore scored from third after Tennessee committed two errors in the infield.
