Ashe & Sutliff Break Tennessee Freshman Records at Tyson Invite & Music City Challenge
February 11, 2022 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – An action-packed Friday night for the Tennessee track & field team witnessed two UT freshman records going down at the Tyson Invite and the Music City Challenge.
At Arkansas' Tyson Invite, freshman Favour Ashe dropped a 6.52-second 60-meter dash in his preliminary run. His time broke the Tennessee freshman record previously held by Leonard Scott at 6.56, which he set in 1999.
Ashe's time is the fastest 60m in the SEC this season and ranks third-quickest in the NCAA. He also moves up to third all-time in Tennessee history in the event, behind Leonard Scott's 6.48 set in 2001 and Christian Coleman's school-record run of 6.45 achieved in 2017.
The Ughelli, Nigeria, native is currently No. 13 in the world with his run Friday night.
In Nashville for the Music City Challenge, freshman Rachel Sutliff ran in the women's 5,000-meter and crossed the line in 16:45.44, setting a Tennessee freshman record. Her time shattered the previous Tennessee rookie record of 16:55.38 set by Morgan Thompson in 1991.
THROWERS GOING THE DISTANCE
Georgios Korakidis had a strong showing at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge as he finished third overall in the men's weight throw – Korakidis was the top collegiate finisher in the event.
With his sixth and final throw, Korakidis heaved the 35-lb weight 21.42m (70-3.5). The mark is a personal best for the Kilkís, Greece, native and moves him to fifth all-time in program history.
In the women's weight throw, Chandler Hayden and Zoe Vlk each set personal-best marks Friday night. Hayden placed third overall in the event as she reached 21.28m (69-9.75) on her final throw. The distance ranks third all-time in Lady Vol history.
Vlk set her personal best with a toss of 16.83m (55-2.75).
LADY VOLters
The pole vaulters were in action at the Tyson Invite Friday and continued their positive momentum heading into Championship Season.
For the third time this year, freshman Sara Borton set a personal-best height. She cleared 4.19m (13-9) at Arkansas, which also moved her to fourth on the Lady Vols' indoor pole vault top-10 list. Her mark is the second-highest set by a Tennessee freshman.
Hannah Jefcoat equaled Borton's height of 4.19m (13-9), notching a season-best clearance for the graduate student.
SHUFFLING THE DECK
Friday night saw seven Tennessee student-athletes reshuffle the UT indoor top-10 lists.
Wayne Pinnock, Sydney Seymour and Charisma Taylor joined Ashe, Borton, Hayden and Korakidis as the athletes reshuffling the deck. Pinnock dropped a time of 6.62 in the men's 60m dash and sped into the No. 7 spot on UT's top-10 list for the 60m.
In the women's 5,000m run, Seymour dropped 18 seconds off her previous best time in the event to finish in 16:00.68. The senior's time makes her the fourth-fastest Lady Vol in the event in indoor program history.
At the Tyson Invite, Taylor continued her climb up the Lady Vol indoor long jump top-10 list. The graduate student leaped a personal best 6.45m (21-2) and moved to No. 3 all-time at Tennessee.
