Women’s Tennis Central: #22 Tennessee at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Opening weekend rolls on for the 22nd-ranked Lady Volunteers tennis team as they face off with Wake Forest Sunday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
There is potential for a second match Sunday, as the loser of Tennessee vs. Wake Forest will face Davidson at 3 p.m., also at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Tennessee (1-0) cruised in its season opener at Charlotte, taking the doubles point with wins from Rebeka Mertena/Elza Tomase on court two and Esther Adeshina/Eleonora Molinaro on court three. In singles, No. 14 Mertena won on court 2, 6-3, 6-1, followed by Molinaro on court 5, 6-3, 6-4. Tomase delivered the fourth and clinching point on court four, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

SCOUTING THE DEMON DEACONS
Wake Forest (0-0) will be playing in its dual season opener Sunday. The Deacons finished individual play last week, playing in the Carolina Kickoff in Columbia, S.C., hosted by South Carolina. Wake won nine matches against opponents from Georgia Tech and Auburn, highlighted by Peyton Pesavento and Saby Nihalani going 3-0 in doubles action.
Wake Forest has three ranked singles players and two doubles pairs in the top 15. In singles, Carolyn Campana is ranked No. 35, Casie Wooten is slotted 58th and Anna Campana rounds out the chart at No. 75. For doubles, Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth are the second-ranked pairing while Samantha Martinelli/Casie Wooten are 15th.

Tennessee is looking to tie up the all-time series in the 32nd matchup between the two schools. Wake Forest currently leads 16-15 and is 9-3 at home. The Lady Vols won the last matchup, 5-2 in Knoxville, on Jan. 31, 2021. The last time Tennessee played Wake on the road dates back to Feb. 3, 2008 when the Lady Vols fell, 4-3.

Tennessee has faced Wake Forest three times before in their opening match, the Lady Vols are 2-1 in such matchups and 1-1 when playing the opener in Winston-Salem. The last time these teams played in Wake's opener was 2002 where the Deacons won at home, 4-3.

Tennessee and Wake Forest individuals squared off in 16 matches during the fall season, including the Demon Deacons traveling to Knoxville to play in the Tennessee Fall Invitational from Oct. 28 to Oct. 30.
