Tennessee Wins Four Events on First Day of Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Tennessee track & field opened the 2022 season Friday night at the Virginia Tech Invitational with four wins, 10 top-3 finishes and 20 total personal bests.
LADY VOLS FINISH 1-2-3 IN 3,000-METER
The Lady Vols started the 2022 indoor season on a high note for Tennessee track & field as the trio of Sydney Seymour, Katie Thronson and Olivia Janke finished 1-2-3 in the women's 3,000-meter run. Seymour won the event with a time of 9:31.94, while Thronson crossed the line second in 9:36.37. She was followed by Janke in third at 9:38.35.
Freshman Brooke Dixon also ran in the 3,000m, finishing fifth in 9:47.29. Dixon's time set a personal best for the Brownsburg, Indiana, native.
JOELLA LLOYD OPENS SEASON WITH 60-METER WIN
Joella Lloyd, a 2020 Tokyo Olympian and reigning SEC Indoor Champion in the 60-meter, got her season started Friday night with another victory in the 60m. Lloyd cruised through prelims and into the finals as the top qualifier with a time of 7.47.
She lowered her time in the finals, winning the event in 7.30. Fellow Lady Vol Shatara Johnson also reached the finals of the 60m, placing fourth at 7.58 and setting a personal-best time.
NEW LADY VOLS WIN ON DEBUT
Newcomers Sara Borton and Charisma Taylor each picked up wins in their respective events Friday night as they made their Lady Vol debuts.
Borton won the women's pole vault in lifetime-best fashion as she cleared a height of 4.00m (13-1.5). On the indoor pole vault top-10 list, Borton ranks seventh all-time in Lady Vol history.
Taylor earned her victory in the women's 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 8.15. In prelims, Taylor ran 8.11, which made her the No. 1 qualifier for finals and tied Domonique Turner for third-fastest in program history in the event.
TOP 3-FINISHES
Tennessee capped the opening night of the Virginia Tech Invitational with 10 total top-3 placements. Those include winners: Borton, Lloyd, Seymour and Taylor. UT's second-place finishers were: Thronson, Joe Hoots, Mia O'Neil and Alex Kay. Placing third for the Orange & White: Mikele Vickers and Janke.
Kay's second-place finish in the 500-meter saw him post a time of 1:03.31, which ties him for fifth-quickest in program history alongside Terrance Livingston and Isky Moat.
