Vols Place Four On SEC Soccer Preseason Watch List
August 17, 2021 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Four Tennessee players were named to the 2021 SEC Soccer Preseason Watch List as announced by the conference on Wednesday.Â
Seniors Mackenzie George and Wrenne French, junior Lindsey Romig, and redshirt-sophomore Jaida Thomas were each named players to watch this season. It is Romig's second-straight appearance on the watch list, while George, French, and Thomas land on the list for the first time.Â
George enters the 2021 season having played a team-high 1,325 minutes during her junior campaign, tallying four goals and four assists. She earned 2020 All-SEC Second Team honors and ranked second on the team in goals scored last season.
French returns for a fifth season, bringing her 60 caps, 54 starts, and 5,065 minutes worth of experience to the back line. She started 14 matches during the 2020-21 season, anchoring UT's defense through four shutouts and scoring the game-winning goal as the Vols clinched an SEC East division championship with a 1-0 victory over No. 9 South Carolina. Â
Romig started 14 matches for UT last season, totaling 1,192 minutes in goal with five shutouts, 62 saves, and a 1.51 goals-against average. She was twice named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts, and as a true freshman, she broke the single-season program record with a 0.58 goals-against average, earning 2019 SEC All-Freshman Team honors. Â
After leading the SEC in goals scored during her first season on the active roster, Thomas is looking to build off a breakout 2020-21 campaign in which she notched 12 goals, five of which were game-winners. She earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors on four occasions and was named to the 2020 SEC All-Freshman Team.Â
The Vols kick off the season on Thursday, hosting Florida Gulf Coast for a 7 p.m. tilt in Regal Stadium. The game will be available for streaming via SECN+, and admission is free to all regular-season matches.Â
