August 11, 2021 | Women's Basketball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of Tennessee rising sophomore Marta Suárez was dominant on the glass, as Spain came from five down in the fourth quarter to win its round of 16 match-up with Japan, 71-64, on Wednesday at the 2021 FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Debrecen (DEB-ret-sin), Hungary.
Playing at Olah Gabor Sports Hall, Suárez pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and added seven points, three assists and a steal in a tourney-high 20 minutes of action for the 6-foot-2 small forward from Oviedo in the Asturias region of Spain. She snared five of those boards and added three points, a pair of assists and a steal in the fourth quarter, as the Spaniards rode a 19-7 final-frame wave to the quarterfinal round. They will meet the No. 1-ranked United States on Friday.
Spain took a 21-19 lead after the first quarter, but Japan responded by outscoring its opponent, 19-14 in the second period and 19-17 in the third stanza to take a 57-52 advantage into the final 10 minutes. Once again stepping up for her squad with key plays at crunch time, Suárez grabbed a defensive rebound and then had the assist on the other end as a teammate executed a hook shot to put the Spaniards back on top, 60-59, with 6:50 left in the game.
Suárez later had an assist as Spain went up 68-61 at the 1:32 mark, and her defensive rebound 20 seconds later provided her team another possession they would utilize to build a 70-61 cushion. She had Spain's final point of the game, hitting a free throw to put her unit up by its largest margin, 71-61, before Japan knocked home a three-pointer with five ticks left to account for the final score.
Through four contests, Suárez has been in the starting lineup each time and is averaging 17.5 minutes per game and putting up 6.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.5 blocks per contest for a balanced Spain attack.
