ORLANDO, Fla. – Despite winning a hard-fought-doubles point, the No. 3 Tennessee men's tennis team saw its impressive 2021 dual campaign come to a close with a 4-2 loss to No. 2 Baylor in the semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at the USTA National Campus.
The result ends Tennessee's (28-4) season, while Baylor (34-4) advances to take on the winner of No. 1 Florida and No. 4 Texas in Saturday's national championship match.
The Vols threw the afternoon's first punch by winning a dramatic doubles point to give themselves a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
After the tandem of senior Mark Wallner and graduate student Giles Hussey fell on court three, the Vols clinched the doubles point with simultaneous match points on courts one and two.
The Aussie duo of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper battled past Sven Lah and Constantine Frantzen, 7-5 to even things at a set apiece.
Seconds later, junior Martim Prata and freshman Johannus Monday clinched UT's early, 1-0 lead as they used a late service break to outlast the Baylor team of Matias Soto and Nick Stachowiak, 6-4.
Holding the early advantage, Hussey doubled the Vols advantage with a dominant 6-4, 6-2 dispatching of Charlie Broom on court five.
The Bears quickly evened the score with a pair of straight-set victories on courts six and three.
Matches at No. 1, 2 and 4 all went into third sets with the score even for a large frame of time.
Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann fell in a tightly contested three-set affair, before freshman Johannus Monday was nipped by Soto, 7-5 in the third set to send Baylor to the National Championship.
Walton had battled back from 2-5 down in the third to even things up at 6-3, 5-7, 5-5 when the match concluded.
