Lewis Claims Individual Crown, Vols Finish Second in Birmingham
April 07, 2021 | Men's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bryce Lewis became the third current Vol to claim an individual tournament championship, while Tennessee finished second as a team at The Collegiate Invitational at the Country Club of Birmingham.
Â
Lewis joins Tyler Johnson (2019 Intercollegiate at the Grove) and Hunter Wolcott (2019 The Hayt) as current Vols who have an individual championship to their credit while donning the orange and white. The redshirt sophomore shot 6-under for the week—one of only four golfers in the entire tournament to even shoot below par.
As a team, Tennessee shot 8-over 860 for the week on the way to its second-place finish in a field that featured eight top-25 teams. The second-place finish is tied with the season-opening Blessings Collegiate Invitational as the Vols' best team finish this season.
Â
"The course this week was set up as a championship test to identify the best player, and it was great to see Bryce get his first collegiate victory against one of the best college fields of the year on such a demanding course," head coach Brennan Webb said. "We had a really solid week as a team on a course that is very much like the ones we are going to face in postseason, so I know we will take a lot of confidence from this going forward."
Â
Competing as an individual, Johnson was Tennessee's second-highest finisher—tying for sixth place and recording his fourth top-10 finish as a Vol. Johnson shot 1-over for the weekend.
Â
Johnson's sixth-place finish is the fourth-highest finish by a Vol at any tournament this season, only behind two top-five finishes from Lewis and once from Wolcott.
Â
Tying for 11th place, Wolcott was able to secure his team-leading fifth top-15 finish of the season, which stands as the 13th top-15 finish of his career. Wolcott shot 2-over for the week as a whole.
Â
Finishing tied for 15th, Brayden Garrison recorded his highest finish of the season and was Tennessee's fourth top-15 finisher. It marks Garrison's ninth career top-15 finish.
Â
One of only 12 golfers in the entire tournament to shoot under par for Wednesday's round, Garrison closed out the tournament by shooting 1-under.
Â
Spencer Cross finished tied for 43rd place, shooting 10-over. Tennessee's fourth counting round on Wednesday came from Rhys Nevin, who shot 12-over for the week in Birmingham.
Â
The Vols now turn their attention to postseason play with the SEC Championship up next from April 21-25 in Sea Island, Georgia.
