Vols in Second Through One Round at SEC Championships
April 21, 2021 | Men's Golf
SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The 18th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team put together a hot start to the SEC Championships and is in second place through one round at Sea Island Golf Club.
Â
The Vols shot 3-under 277 as a team on Wednesday and are just two strokes behind first-place Georgia. Following Friday's third round, the top eight teams in the field will move on to match play.
Â
Spencer Cross was a large reason for Tennessee's day one success, as he is tied for second place overall after shooting 5-under 65 on day one. Cross' 65 in round one marks the lowest round of his Tennessee career and has positioned him just one stroke out of the lead. The Sevierville native carded seven birdies during round one.
Â
"Really solid start for us today," head coach Brennan Webb said. "We were in the round all day and the guys continued to do what they have done all year.
Â
"I'm very proud of the great round Spencer played in his first round ever in the SEC Championship. The strength of our team is our depth and it's a comforting feeling knowing all five of them are capable of playing great any day."
Â
Coming off his first collegiate individual championship in the regular season finale, Bryce Lewis put together another solid round in his first career SEC Championships appearance—shooting even par and sitting in a tie for 15th place.
Â
Tied with Lewis in 15th is Hunter Wolcott, who continued his momentum into the postseason after finishing in the top 20 of the final four tournaments of the regular season.
Â
Tennessee's final first round counting score came from Rhys Nevin, who shot 2-over 72 and is tied for 33rd place. Brayden Garrison is tied for 56th through one round, shooting 5-over for the opening 18 holes.
