No. 17 Lady Vols Upset No. 10 LSU

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 17-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team blew past No. 10-ranked LSU 4-1 in the SEC Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinal on Wednesday.
The win is the first of the season over a top-10 ranked opponent and fifth win over an opponent ranked in the top-25.
UT (17-7) got off to an early advantage, claiming the doubles point with a pair of wins on courts three and two.
Junior Rebeka Mertena and sophomore Carly Briggs collected the first win of the day with a 6-2 win over Safiya Carrington and Anna Loughlan on court three. The duo picked up their second-straight win together and fifth win of the season.
The No. 31-ranked duo of Daria Kuczer and Esther Adeshina clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 dismantling of No. 84-ranked Taylor Bridges and Paris Corley on court two. The newcomer pair also picked up their second-straight win.
On court one, senior Tenika McGiffin and freshman Eleonora Molinaro held a 5-4 advantage on court one when the doubles point was clinched.
LSU (14-5) opened singles play with a win on court three.
Kuczer responded on court four with a straight-set (6-2, 6-4) win, for her season-long 12th-stright win, over Maggie Cubitt to give UT a 2-1 lead. The win gives Kuczer an astounding 19-1 record in dual match play in her debut season in Orange and White.
Senior Johanna Silva picked up her 87th career win and UT's third point on court six. The senior from Hamburg, Germany downed Nina Geissler 6-1, 7-5 to move into a tie for 14th in all-time singles wins as a Lady Vol.
On court one, No. 85-ranked junior Rebeka Mertena clinched the match at 4-1 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over No. 110-ranked Safiya Carrington. Mertena collected her 11th win in dual-match play this season and fifth career win in a three-set bout.
Up next, the Lady Vols take on Georgia in the semifinal at noon ET in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
