April 17, 2021 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee track & field program wrapped up its fourth weekend of outdoor competition winning five events on Saturday, as the Big Orange was represented at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville and the USC Open in Columbia, South Carolina.
Â
SHOT PUT DOUBLE: At the Virginia Challenge, Tennessee's dynamic, school-record holding duo of Latavia Maines and Jordan West each claimed first-place finishes for the second week in a row following last week's double at the Tennessee Relays. Maines' heave of 17.79m (58-4.5) edged the runner-up at UVA by more than a meter, while West's toss of 19.78 meters (64-10.75) topped the field by more than 50 centimeters.
Â
MS. UNDEFEATED: Lady Vol graduate student Maia McCoy has yet to lose an individual event this season, continuing that trend Saturday as she won the 200-meter dash at South Carolina with a time of 23.60 into a -2.0 m/s headwind. The Memphis native has claimed five events titles during the 2021 outdoor campaign, winning the 100-meter dash three times and the 200-meter dash twice.
Â
THERE GOES THAT MAN: Running his second 400-meter dash of the season, UT redshirt sophomore Christopher Bailey cruised to a win with his time of 45.45 seconds at the USC Open. The Atlanta native ran at least one second faster than all other competitors at the meet.
Â
SAME CREW, SAME RESULT: The Tennessee women's 4x100-meter quartet of Jada Chambers, Joella Lloyd, Saqukine Cameron and Maia McCoy opened the day with their second-straight victory at South Carolina. The group combined for a time of 44.50, taking down the host Gamecocks who finished 2nd in 45.41.
Â
OTHER PODIUM FINISHES: In addition to its five victories, Tennessee tabbed three top-3 finishes to round out the weekend's top performances. Redshirt senior Alexis Duncan continued to chip away in the 100-meter hurdles, logging her fourth-straight season best mark at 13.31 seconds to place second in South Carolina. Redshirt freshman Emily Knight took third place in the 800-meter run at USC, turning in an outdoor personal-best time of 2:14.39 on Saturday.
