Third-Ranked Vols Take Down No. 20 Kentucky in Tight, 4-3, Decision
March 28, 2021 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Two key victories in doubles play and three impressive straight-set wins in singles pushed the third-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 20 Kentucky, 4-3, on Sunday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Tennessee (19-2, 8-1 SEC) has now beaten Kentucky (14-5, 4-4 SEC) four consecutive times, marking the longest win streak for UT, since knocking off the Wildcats four straight times from 1998-2001.
In doubles play, Kentucky threw the initial punch as the 20th-ranked pair of Cesar Bourgois and Gabriel Diallo knocked off Kentucky's Australian pair of Adam Walton and Pat Harper, 6-3, on court one.
Despite being down a set, the tandems of junior Martim Prata and freshman Johannus Monday on court two and graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner on court three clinched their matches within seconds of each other to give Tennessee the doubles point in come-from-behind fashion.
Leading 1-0, Kentucky's Liam Draxl took down Monday on court one to even the score at one apiece.
As Draxl was tying the score, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann finished off his dominant victory over Cesar Bourgois, 6-1, 6-3 to put the Vols back up, 2-1.
On court two, Kentucky once again tied the team score, as Diallo took down Walton, 1-6, 6-0, 6-3.
After being inserted into the lineup for the third consecutive match, Wallner won a hard-fought straight-set affair over Mathis Moysan, 6-4, 7-6(1), to put Tennessee on the brink of match point.
Up, 3-2, Hussey won the final four games to roll past No. 84 Joshua Lapadat, 7-6(3), 6-2 to clinch match point and an 8-1 SEC record for Tennessee. The win was also Hussey's third over a ranked opponent this season.
Prata fell in a third set super-tiebreak on court three to conclude the afternoon's proceedings.
MR. CONSISTENT
Luca Wiedenmann may need to change his nickname from Mr. Clincher to Mr. Consistent. Despite not having clinched a single SEC match, Wiedenmann is 8-1 in league action, winning all eight matches in straight sets, while conceding more than four games in just a single set once in those wins.
DOUBLES CONTINUES TO BE PIVOTAL
Sunday's win was the Vols 36th consecutive when winning the doubles point, a streak dating to March 31, 2019.
UP NEXT
Tennessee will take a week off before taking on SEC foe Arkansas in Fayetteville next Sunday afternoon. First serve from Arkansas is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
